because male betta's build bubble nests, and i woundered if it could be that and you wasnt aware they did it.

could be a protein build up, do you have a filter and how often/how much are your water changes.

Was it like an oily scum on the surface? This is protein build up and means you need to be keeping the tank cleaner.

you wouldnt "see" ammonia. all you might see from too much ammonia would be a bacterial bloom that would cause cloudy water.
