Most likely so. I've only killed fish that can fit in my hand, and the way they impact, there's probably several piercings from bone fragments. Fortunately I've rarely ever had to kill fish and never any large ones and hope I never have to.

uggghhhh i know its life, but all the methods just sound so horrible. (well except the clove oil one).

I was not aware that a fish can still live without its body, so that is good to know, although I could never decapitate nor pierce the brain. i feel bad when i step on ants on accident!

What's bad is walking home at night in the rain cos all the snails are out on the pavement and it's dark so you can't see them, so you can't avoid stepping on them...:/

i guess i can see why some of you think its bad to boil a fish or lobster. i mean if you cant step on an ant afterall....

my local food market sells live lobsters with instructions on how to boil them.

Oh boy...

Freezing -> bad. Nothing to do with hypotermy. Fish can feel when its cells are destroyed by ice..
Boiling -> bad. Fish can jump out and skin hatches out. Good way? No way! Fish brains don't destroy fast enough in hot water.

Lobster and fish? Hmm... What can I say? Read books of biology! It's almost same as compare bird and mosquito to each other - because they both fly. Same way as lobster and fish live in water... If it's ok to put lobster to boiling water it doesn't mean that you can do same to fish.

fish don't feel pain in the sense we do.

Fishes have very good nervous system and it's very similar like we have. Although they are not totally same.

If you can't use knife, scissors or hammer, then you should think about having: MS222, benzocaine or eugenol (100% eugenol (=clove oil) is cheap, and you get it from healthy stores). MS222 and benzocaine are used widely (benzocaine you find e.g. from throat pastils (from pharmacy), because it eases throat pain.) Unfortunately both of those chemicals are so strong that you need prescription to buy them enough to use them in an(a)esthesia of fish.

mrV took the words out of my mouth!

check this aticle about fish feeling pain - Fish 'capable of experiencing pain'

i had to kill a bala shark once, i brought him to the kitchen, just about to decapitate him, but he flipped off, and landed on the floor knocking himself out... this made the duty a little easier.

if i had to do it again, i would use clove oil
