when i got my tank, it came with filter, light, all that. kinda. but my filter didnt come with lil sponges or anything. its a double, with 2 sides that pour out. i have those 2 blue filter thingys, but do i need a sponge in the back of mine?? when my friend got his, it came with the sponge, but no blue filter thing. hes not using it cuz it doesnt fit back there.. but i was just wondering cuz i think i saw someone say something that made me think that maybe your supposed tohave something back there to keep the bacteria and stuff out. if so, what house hold stuff can i use??

and sorry for this being a second post about it, but i kinda want a response soon...

Those blue thingys are filter cartriges most oftenly contain activated carbon and some mesh for mechanical filtration. To really filter your tank and obtain good quality water you need to have biological filtration with come from bacteria in somthing like a sponge or filterfloss or somtimes ceramic disks that are permeable (sp?). These media give living space for the benificial bacteria to grow in. So i would suggest using one of the above mentioned behind your cartriges, if you use the cartriges at all. The carbon is not needed at all times, its purpose is to remove chemicals in the water such as medication you might add, which is why the bottles always say remove carbon from the tank before treating

Hope that helps, if not there is a wonderful section in the new to fishkeeping that explains the filter and its function in more detail and also descibes the cycle that your tank goes through which is a very important thing to know if your serious about the hobby!!

Good luck and have fun :good:

i knew it!! and thanks!!

oh, and would i need 2 since i have 2 cartridges?? which i knew by the way...i just forgot the name

you may want two for either side does it look like it takes one on either side? Are you going to add anything else for the filter to grow bacteria? cause i have found those cartriges to be insufficient for bacteria growth.
