I was snapping with my camera tonight...

This is my new tank, I've just done a big water change on it which is why you can see the bubbles. Having some issues with alage in this one at the moment....

Due to the open topped nature of the tank I am finding the shrimp escaping, I have found 5 dead so far, dried up and preserved perfectly near the front of the stand and round the side. I guess they must be climbing out then dying of course, but I dont understand how they end up back near the tank? Unless they're trying to get back in or something. My front room is right next to the tank so I am dreading the day I get a shrimp jumping across the rug. Maybe I should look at some way of keeping the blighters in.

And this is my smaller tank I'm still keeping running.....

The water changes are becoming a pain already, I did one tonight and I must've sloshed about 1 bucket all over the floor in the process. :)

Whats the planting layout that you have on the second tank? Looks very nice

You could use some fine steel mesh and construct some sort of lid to keep the shrimp in? The mesh would also allow light penetration and oxygen flow.
You have lovely tanks... the plants all look really nice and healthy.

Looks excellent, what sort of substrate have you in the first one, is it all ADA, it looks quite deep.

Very nice though, good job.

On the shrimp i dont think there is much you can do unless you use an enclosed hood, ive heard of some people employing fine netting, mosquito netting, it stops fish from jumping as well but defeats the purpose of an open top tank.

NICEE :) im planning to set up a similar open top tank :) i guess il be facing the same shrimp out of the tank problem.... im guessing that the shrimp cannot and would not try to jump out ofthe water but they climb out via the water hoses, maybe an upturned funnel like structure near the funnel tops would helpe discourage the shrimps from climbing out

Looks reaaaaaaaaaaal nice OWW *thumbs up*

That's a brilliant idea!! :hyper:

p.s. Fantastic tanks by the way!!

awesome tank mate, looks really neat (the whole package i mean, not just the insides). sorry to hear your having algae problems, i wont try to advise as i'm having a few issues of my own right now.

on the shrimp front the upside down funnel is a good idea but it's worth mentioning that your shrimp will still escape by climbing up the plants in the rear left corner. they can also climb the corners by digging their legs into the silicone.

if they want to get out, they will.

i've found that high nitrate (over 15ppm makes them climb more i guess theyre looking for clean water). not that 15ppm is high normally but they are more sensitive to it than most.

good luck and thanks for posting the pics.

Pretty tank and set up m8. I love the open top look but dread to think what id find floating in my tanks if i tried that.

Looking good mate, I was just wondering how your tanks were doing.

I'm surprised you have an algae problem though. What are your specs (lighting, CO2, water chemistry, dosing etc.)?
