The only other small plant i have is Micranthemum micranthemoides but it's not in as long as the glosso and is more tolerant of low light, as far as i can tell.
Anyway, i'll try the fert tabs and i'm going to break the plants up smaller and we'll see how that goes.
Watch this space.

Ok, I got time earlier to redo the Glosso so it's all planted in individual stems...well, nearly all anyway.
I removed it all, rinsed it in a mild saline solution (snail paranoia) and replanted. I couldn't find any fert tabs anywhere so i dosed with a Tetraplant liquid fert.
We shall see....................

that was quick - i think were simmillar when something's bugging me about the tank life goes on hold till it's sorted. ha ha

just one more thing. as i have not seen a pic of the tank make sure there is nothing shading the glosso, you want as much light as possible on it to get it going. i would send you some ferrotabs but i'm almost out of them. next time i buy some i'll send a few in the post.

Thanks jimbooo, yeah, the tank was bugging me so something had to be done. extended lunch breaks have to be taken sometime!
Don't worry about the ferrotabs, i'll find them somewhere at the weekend or if not, aquaticsonline. Thanks for the offer though, very kind.
As i'm looking at the tank now the algae is still there and it's spread from the glosso too. It's started on the Micranthemum micranthemoides at a rate of knots. nOt looking good... Thanks to some expert pm advice from zig I have my CO2 up and running (Thanks zig, again.... B) ) so we'll see if that makes any difference.
More tomorrow.

Ok, well the CO2 has been running for the night and the algae seems to have slowed down. It's still there but so are the plants it's attached to so i reckon that's an improvement!

zig, that CO2 mix worked like a charm. I had bubbles after 30 minutes and it's going strong. Nice one.

Just try and get the new lights hooked up and i would say this will solve the melting plants, id say they just need light, i was in Wackers (name of a lfs for anybody else reading) yesterday afternoon looking at the plants again and some tanks as well, some amazing looking Aqua One tanks might buy one of those myself, anyway i was looking at the glosso, now i had only purchased mine last friday and 6 days later the glosso in the shop is all but dead its basically a brown mush (still for sale mind :D ) so basically without proper amounts of light it will turn to a mush very quickly and die.

Ok, managed to find some root fertiliser this morning. Nutrafin Plantgro 16:9:12. They're those slow release (which I suspect is corporate shorthand for useless!) type of plastic stick with holes in that you stick into the substrate. Supposed to last for a year each! Hmmmm.......
Any one have any experience with these? I guess they're better than nothing for the moment.
I've realised that the fact that my glosso is mostly planted in play sand can't be doing anything for the plants chances of getting any nutrients so i suppose anything I can add will help.

That's interesting, zig. My glosso came from the same place on the same day so there's a fairly good chance it's the light. It looked so good in the shop on Friday though, didn't it? Must have just come in! I've figured out the wiring of the ballasts but i need to get the lamp holders and lamps. Hopefully this weekend.
I didn't know that Whackers stock Aqua1 tanks, must be new. I'm just back from Petstore in Blanchardstown and they have a 10 foot Aqua 1 tank that's just amazing, and not a whole lot more dosh than a Jewel Trigon either! No plants at all out there, but some lovely fish. Thinking of getting a banjo catfish, looks like something out of Jurassic Park!

yeah those nutrafin sticks are okay but more for feeding swords etc (i use them under each big plant root system) they may help with the glosso, worth a try. they just look a bit ugly sticking out of the substrate. if it cures the problem then that's the least of your worries.

Id say all of those plants had just come in, the glosso looked perfect when i bought it, other plants in the shop yesterday were suffering as well but none as bad as the glosso, the glosso was basically brown mush dead, other plants were doing ok but you could see that within another few days they would probably also be beyond redemption, but this is a common problem with plants in lfs, when they get them in they look great, come back in a week and they look ragged because of lack of light mainly, although they do use a decent amount of light on the tanks in there it still isnt enough, but i will say that its a lot better than most lfs that i have been to, i didnt buy anything i will wait for the next shipment, i will probably go back next friday or something like that and hope they have new plants in.

The Aqua Ones are only small tanks, some were nano tanks others a bit bigger, none bigger than maybe 15 gallons, but they look great IMO i think i will definatly buy one.

Ive been to the shop in the blanchardstown complex....absolutely no plants last time i was there.

Make sure the endcaps are waterproof if you dont have glass covers over the tank, you get big condensation buildups when the lights are off (as im sure you allready have discovered)

The nano tanks that they have already setup look great... I was thinking of one for my desk in work! Like i need any more tanks!
Thanks for the reminder on the waterproof caps. One of those things that I wouldn't have remembered until it was too late... rather like forgetting to raise the co2 unit above water level before disconnecting the tubing so it doesn't turn into a syphon and start emptying the tank onto the floor behind the tank where i dropped the tubing and didn't realise until my feet got wet.... I wouldn't mind but i did it with both units! Must stop doing tank maintenance after midnight!

Don't buy too many plants, zig - java are delivering mine next week and i've already nearly got my tank full so i'll be looking for homes for a load of plants, i reckon!

i have the same problem with my plants. There are grey things over them and then the leaves just dissapear.

Hi Elitefishy, post your tank stats, plant types, lighting levels, substrate type etc. and we may come up with a solution. It sounds like the same problem.
