I would say the first JD (you call standard) actually looks like one of the so-called "unwanted" off-spring when breeding for EBJD's. When bred, the offspring will be (roughly) 1/4 true standard JD's, 1/4 Full EBJD's, and 1/2 Mixed (genes for both patterns). I believe your fish is one of these halves, but for some reason, the recessive gene is showing through. You can tell it has the recessive EB gene as some of the coloration is coming through and actually makes quite a stunning pattern with the normal greens and aquas of the JD. It is def a male with the coloration of the jawline being a direct result of the EB gene, not of it having the typical female coloration along the jawline. If the fish did not have the recessive EB gene, he would look like a perfectly normal and beautiful JD. I actually think you got the best of both worlds here, hopefully the health and longevity of a standard JD along with some of the EB coloration :good:

Sorry about losing your large EBJD, but because of the selective breeding, and making the recessive genen dominant, it seems that they have the tendency to just get sick or start to go down hill. Hopefully you will have luck your new Juve's, but as i as said above, your big guy may be the lucky one who has the wonderful patterning and coloration along with the standard health :good:

Awesome pics. Do you guys feed NLS?

Where are Jd's from? I'd like to keep larger C and S. American Cichlids such as Firemouths, I've recently become interested in Jack Dempseys. Can anyone guide me in the right direction for setting up a good tank stock? I plan to get a tank no more then 100g, probably 70-90g.

Im not sure what the acronym NLS stands for... sorry.

I believe the JD is primarily a south american fish living in slow moving, muddy streams and rivers.

I have recently upgraded my guys home to a 125G. Use gravel and bogwood as decoration. Tankmates include 6 x SD's, 7 x Giant danios, 2 x Juve green sevs, 1 x common plec and 6 x khuli loaches. I would be cautious with the danios and khuli's as they do make lovely little snacks for a full grown JD, but my guy has been around them for most of his life and seems to pay no attention. I think he is actually more afraid of the khuli's than they are of him.

Any number of cichlids combonations can be used as well depending on your tank size. for a 90 or 100G, a JD with a GT, a couple fm's and and maybe a con would be a good mix (depending on personality of the individual fish). There are alot more but this combo is based on easy to find species in most lfs

NLS= New Life Spectrum
What is an SD?

Will Rams work with a single JD?

thanks for the acronym help. And since I have no idea what the hell New Life Spectrum is, I'm going to guess; No, I dont feed them that.

an SD is a Silver Dollar. Its a common dither fish in the new world cichlid realm as its an oddly shaped fish and gets to a good size so can usually stand being in a community of aggressive cichlids.

I wouldn't put rams in with a JD. The JD may not see the ram as any bit of a threat and therefore not even pay attention, but I wouldn't take the chance. It's best to keep comparable sized cichlids together or if you do smaller cichlids like cons, then they need to be hardy and feisty to stand up for themselves.

Yeah agreed! I would say the rams may have a problem with the JD as rams tend to be small and more peaceful. The JD is a rather agressive and terirorial fish in my experience and mine won't allow much in the tanks. it even attacked a plant as I dropped it in... tore it up pretty bad... that being said, they are still AWESOME fish, lots of personality. I'm going to keep mine alone for the span of it's life but if I were to add any tank mates I'd make sure they were at least semi agressive and 5+ inches. but maybe my JD is just a mean fish! lol! Either way it's my favorite!

As for the NLS, my LPS doesn't have any. I've been feeding it Cichlid flakes and floating Cichlid pellets. I've just moved it on to a food called "Hearty Mix" by Tetra i think. They are floating pellets as well but a bit larger and TBH there was a picture of a JD on the packaging! lol! I figured it would be a safe bet.

I've heard of people making special foods for their larger Cichlids like JDs and Os and feeding all sorts of random things like raw meats and earth worms and cheeze and so on. Anyone know if there is any major benifits to this kind of feeding and if there are any risks or procedures to follow before feeding these sorts of things?

Thanks for the info guys, I'll continue researching for my future tank.

NLS is considered the best highest quality fish food around. I've found it cheapest on eBay.

I feed my guy primarily cichlid pellets, whole frozen krill and occationally some husked peas (good for his digestion). Occationally he will scoop up a mouthful of mysis that I put in for the other tankmates, but this must be like a couple pops of popcorn to him, so def stick with the larger foods :good:
