Hey Guys,

I've just ordered a 65L(17G) fish tank (50x49x34 WxHxD). I am guessing i can fit around 15 small fishes. Am i right?
The fishes im thinking to purchase as a start are maybe 4 zebra danio to help with the tank cycle.
Then later 6 Neons (Mix with normal and black ones and maybe bloodfin). Do they swim well together?
2 Dwarf Gourami and other fishes that would work well with them. Any ideas?

Another thing. If i purchase a peice of wood. How do i go about cleaning it?
PH levels need to be around 7 as well?

Any advice would be appriceated!

Thanks

Hi magicd,

Are you making an informed decision to cycle the filter with the danios? Sounds like you may have read some about it but if not, that is called a fish-in cycle and you may want to compare and contrast it with a fishless cycle. Many members here report in during fish-in cycling saying they wish they had done a fishless cycle. If you decide on a fishless cycle, you'll have plenty of time to discuss your stocking plans (which sound pretty good!)

hey magic,
congrats on the new tank, its always exciting.

In terms of stocking,
I would stick to one species of tetra, neons and black neons are actually not related and are different species, so they dont really school together, unless terrified, then they'll school with anything. Were you thinking of bloodfin tetras? they will get too big for your tank IMO

Also i would only get one dwarf gourami. In the small tank two males would tear each other apart, and if you get one male and one female, without enough space the male will relentlessly bully the female.

For purchasing drift wood, many sold specifically for aquariums can just be rinsed and put in. Otherwise you should boil it and soak it. Soaking helps the wood to sink, as well as gives the wood time to leach out all its tannins (i dunno what they are called =P)
Basically wood can make your water tinted brown or tea colour, so soaking it before will help.

Good luck =)

Thanks for the replies!

Ahh yeh i might do a fishless cycle. Better for the fish and faster bacteria growth or something like that i think haha.

Thanks, but this isnt my first tank acctually haha. About 6 years ago i had a fish tank with gold fishes and they never really lasted long since i didnt know anything then. But now im starting from scratch again!
Ok, i guess i will get 1 species of tetras (not the bloodfins). Only 1 dwarf gourami sounds fine but will i be able to add another fish like a German Blue Ram or 2 Killifish?
About the drift wood. Would i have to soak it in dechorinated water or is tap water fine?

Thanks!

65l is 14.4 UK gallons if thats at all relevant to you, so i would be careful not to overstock
