I bought a male betta back in December, everything was fine he was in a 21l tank with a few other small fish. He had a case of finrot when i first got him, but I managed to stop it and his tail was slowing growing back a bit. But a few days ago I though the finrot had returned as he had lot most of his tail fin, one a stump left, then i realised it was one of the other fish nipping him.

I though he was on his way out as he didn't seem to be moving so I put him in a floating trap just so the other fish couldn't get to him and to be truthful I didn't think he would last the night, he was in there for 2 days and some how he seems to have had a new lease of life and is moving and eating well again. I went out today and bought him his own 1 gallon tank and put a plasic tree trunk thing in for a hidy hole. He seems to love his new wee tank and again is still eating and swimming well and there is a little sign of regrowth in his fins.

I have added some API aquarium salt to his water and some anti bacterial meds just to make sure he doesn't get finrot back. Is there anything else i can do to help him?

Is his tank suitable for him to live permantly in. It has no heater or filter but i will be doing a full water change every 2 days and the room he is in is usually quite warm so the water will never drop to a low temp???

Thanks guys :good:

You will be okay without a filter as long as you keep up on water changes. 1 gallon is usually the very minuimum a betta to be kept in. As long as your room temp is around 72-80 he will be fine without a heater. Tails may take a while to grow back sometimes especially if they were nipped at or had a disease. Sounds like everything is going okay now though! Best of Luck

Thanks guys. Yes he seems very happy at the minute and had perked up alot since last week. I have a new 80l tank cycling at the mo so might add him to that eventually depending what other fishes i decide to put in and once he has fully recovered. But if he seems happy enough in his wee tank on his own then i might aswell just leave him.

Just to let everyone know since I am happy that my wee betta boy is doing great. His fins are showing signs of regrowth already and it has only been 5 days since I moved him. And he is always building little bubble nests, which I take it is a good thing. I have put his little tank next to my bigger tank so he can still see the other fishes which he seems to like. Catch him flaring at them now and then.

Also I was just wondering, how big are female bettas meant to get? I have two who I think are sisters as bought them at the same time and they are the exactly same colour, and they are both about 3 inches long and they are really stocky little things, they dont get overfed and 2 pellets 2 or 3 times a day.

That is like max for a female rarely they get bigger, you could try get some melafix as well as using the salt my bettas fins are growing back so quickly from using both. in time you should maybe upgrade to a 2-2.5g bowl as mine like a change of tank every so often.
Good Luck.
