maybe, maybe not

But since the womenarived in Australia, she smuggled them in because of Australia's tough import laws.
theres a risk that they could be let out into our natural waters and screw up our eco system and kill all our fish
Rather those fish then our rainbowfish, gobies and so on

Ah Oz's import laws!

Fell victim to them myself when I flew into Perth Airport.
They wanted to burn my shoes as I had been on a farm in the last few months, destroy my cheerios as they may have got foot and mouth into the country and confiscate my Dairy Milk as it may have been harbouring BSE. Didn't notice the apple in my pocket though! :p

Still I was reasonably lucky - one of my friends flew into Cairns and had his tent and half his clothes incinerated as he had spent two weeks on a farm in Malaysia!

The woman could face up to 10 years in jail and an $80,000 fine for some beautiful fish.
And fair enough too.

Quranteen is here for a reason, and because Australia has the toughest laws, we have what one could consider a safer country from invasive species. Invasive species cost economies billions of dollars anually and damage our environment in ways un-imaginable.

A couple of exotic species in australia from the aquaria trade are the Convict cichlid and caulerpa taxifolia, to name just two. I could go on.... :shifty:

So be prepared to pay the full cost, whether its 10 years inprissonment or $110,000 dollars if yuor caught. And rest assured, she isnt the only one...

are they not queen arabesques?...

Seems ****ing rediculous that you would recieve 10 years for smuggling wildlife... I'm sure there are hundreds of places in the world where tropical fish could addapt to yet they have not been made illegal. Always seems Australia go completely over the top when it comes to animal imports....

And I thought we were the "Paranoid Brothers" of Australians...

trust me, i know how you feel.
But things are getting better
Doggfather told me a few weeks ago that some new fish (namely clown plecs and various loaches) have now been allowed for import to Australia.
I remember he wrote to the government about import laws and such last year.
And, if you're lucky enough to find an illegal fish, theyre 100 times the price :(

Yes, Australia is rediculous, why do you think there are so many Aussies living in Britain and the U.S? :p

I am going to have to defend Australias import laws on this one. As an island country with no "attached" neighbours, we have the most unique wildlife of any other country. And yes, that includes the U.S.A. There are so many of our wildlife that are endangered by introduced species such as rabbits as it is, let alone letting something into the country they know nothing about. OK, so you may say "but its a plec, it can't hurt" and you may be well right. But imagine in 10 or so years time when the "safe plec" is destroying our waterways and they start saying "oh, that safe plec.....now its killing our native fish"....

Get my point?

There are many illegal fish I would love to have, the main one being the royal plec  For now I am going to have to adhere to the regulations and drool ocer other peoples royals....eg. rvms :p
