How did you determine the sex of Bongo?

I personally never knew how beautiful Jack Dempsey's were till I decided to own one for myself but your pictures show it off so well.

I read on different websites that the blue markings on the lower part of the gill plate (the flash from my camera made them look green in my pics but they are actually blue) determines that it's female, also females are less colorful.

The males dorsal and anal fin is longer and comes to a point, and they won't have as many blue spots on their gill plate, or something like that
