Hi, I've been trauling the web for info on oscars.

Once website says the advantage to feeders is that the oscar will not scour the sand/gravel for food. Is this true? (I can't use feeders anyway lol)

Also, it mentions that you shouldn't teach your oscar to eat from your hand, because they will jump out for food when you open the cover glass (this one does sound right)

also, can someone tell me the approximate growth rate of oscars?

OFF TOPIC: (but not worth making another thread about) Is this true?

'Bala sharks, unfortunately, get one of the rawest deals in the aquarium market. They are sold as frequently as cory cats'

Thanks

Not sure what you mean by "scour the sand/gravel for food" .. If you mean it will stop them from digging .... then sorry but thats in nearly all cichlids nature Lol. If you mean just generally looking at the bottom of the tank then you must not be giving your fish enough love Lol.

Oscars do not need feeders. If you want to give them meaty food throw in a prawn or 10 :good:

As for jumping, again most cichlids once they know you will bring them food will jump up when the lid is lifted.

Growth rate depends on size of tank, how much fed and how frequent you change your water. My oscar has gone from 1inch to 8inches in less then 6 months kept in a 5x2 fed a few times a day and 50% water changed every week.

Regards,

Joel

awesome, I wan't sure about the feeder comment either, I don't think I could actually feed a feeder anyway lol

I also don't really mind the sand shifting lol

You do not need to feed oscars feeder fish. The only serve to risk disease and are not very healthy. Oscar are not picky and will eat almost anything. Nothing beats a good cichlid pellet.

I would not let an oscar eat out my hand, no. Not for jumping reasons but because I like my fingers, lol. Adult oscars (at least the ones I've had) tend to feed a bit aggressively and have big mouths. They WILL bite your fingers.

Oscars grow about an inch a month until they are about 8 inches in length. Then their growth rate will slow down.
