I posted these on the SMP site last night for Gerald, but I'll post them here too since they came out pretty good B)

First up, be still my heart, one of the little simplex men. I love them so much, I swear they get SO excited to see people.

This is a 'chiangrai' and after seeing them Gerald says they're definitely wild splendens (theres been disagreement as to whether these are a species or not) They are so, so very aggressive :S

That's all I have for now. I'll update with imbellis and smaragdina as soon as I get a nice shot.

Are those real leaves? If so, very interesting. I've always wondered if a "natural" substrate would be better, but I'd be too afriad to try it. Gorgeous fish, however. I have a feeling one day, I'm going to end up being into wilds...

Yes, they're oak leaves  Tuesday and I took a walk down to the park to gather them for the wilds. I boiled them and rinsed a bunch and then just put them in the tanks by the fistfuls, they love them!

My water tests at 7.8 out of the tap. After boiling the leaves I tested the pot water since it was black and it came out at 6.4, but since the water is so dark it was hard to get an accurate reading so I've been following their tank water closely just to see. It's dropped slowly but only to 7.2'ish.

Because they're not mine. They came in from Thailand for our show, and by the time we made it to the wilds during the auction- the majority of the crowd was gone. Last time we had a number of folks show up just for the wilds, not so much this time.
I adore them and I'd keep them in a heartbeat, but I don't have the space to spawn them or keep them permanently.

ETA~ One pair of the mahachai are mine though, and one of the simplex boys since mine has dropped into a deep depression after I changed him to a bigger tank.

So since the show is over, do you keep them for the next show? Did you buy them with intention to sell or you just have connections in Thailand? :hey: I don't know a whole lot about the innerworkings of betta shows/auctions.

We're just going to sell them for 20 a pair, we still owe the person who caught them the money. I plan to list them on Aqubid this coming week. They're from William @ Siamcrowntail, he's good friends with my co-show chair so I'm in no rush. He's not going to hunt us down or anything :p He sends them in to us out of the kindness of his heart
Sending them in to the next show is something we talked about, but the show season is over until the Spring so we might as well just sell them. He'll send more for us next time. Interested in anything...? Hmmmmm..? :hey:

Very interested, I owe myself some bettas since I've been studying organic chemistry nonstop the past couple weeks... or atleast that's what I keep telling myself. But I really should do my research before I get into anything, I've never had wilds before and still consider myself a beginner with bettas (I just got into them this summer). Would any do well in a 5 gallon? 10 gallon? With tankmates such as cories or ottos? What would you recommend?

 Simplex

I've stopped looking at other bettas and only look at wilds and plakats on aquabid now :look:. I feel guilty or something.

I adore the little chiangrai/splendens, but most of all I love the simplex!!
I swear, I'm going to get a pair of those just as soon as I have room!

They're lovely :)

I had a few imbellis about a year ago and one of them looked exactly like your mahachai :/

Love them, they're cute. So, the oak leaves don't mess up the water or anything?
Nope. It was sort of cloudy the first day or so, but a water change fixed that. I'm still watching closely. The fish seem great though.

Tough call, and keep in mind that we're *all* sort of beginners when it comes to wilds, even the pros! You could easily get away with a pair or two in a ten gallon with cories, but I'm not sure how cories would be should the bettas ever spawn. That's the tricky part when it comes to keeping them together. I suppose having an extra tank on hand is good, just in case.
