Some of my new fish

Hey! You must be fishing ( :p ), because those are great pictures. Is that a Ram or probably appisto? Whichever fish it is, it is a beauty too! I think he is smiling for the camera. A happy, smilling fish.

Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (Blue Ram).

I was being serious and not looking for compliments on my photography, however i dont mind you making compliments of the fish cos i am quite proud of him.

Id like to make an encyclopedia of the fish ive kept to add to my own personal web page but im note sure my digital cam is good enough (the above pics were fine cos the fish hovered long enough for me to take it... you should try snapping a RedTailed Black Shark or a Microsynodontis Catfish as they are both quite active when they come out of hiding)

So far, all my fish have immediately caught sight of the camera and like proper ladies and gents have scurried for cover  to tease me, peeking around the plants and decore front on. It has discouraged me. I read that Angel Lady ran some photo competitions for the forum; she seems like a nice lady (I assume the gender.) Check in with her about your encyclopedia.

The different forums are also always looking to add photos of varieties of fish for members to use to ID their fish by.

My camera is a Kodak easy share DX7440 but even I'm not happy with it because I dont feel like I get as good of pictures as I'd like to get. I'm hoping to get a camera that has a nice big lens on it that way I can zoom in really far and get nice sharp close ups.

I had the camera set in macro and just zoomed in and far as I could without the pics becoming blurry. You also can't take pictures straight on you need to be on a slight angle or else you get the big flash spots. Also if you hold down the button and let the camera focus on the subject (fish in this case) and then take the picture I've found you get a lot sharper, better color pictures.

Most of the time I dont sit really close to the aquarium I sit back on a chair about 3 feet away and just use the macro zoom button. I've found thats the best way to get clear shots. Also just play around with the settings sometimes using different flashes you get better pictures for some reason. Like with some of these pictures for some reason using the red eye flash they came out really good but with another type of flash I got really washed out pictures. Seems all throughout the day different flashes work better.

Also have patience. I took probably about 50-60 pictures just to get 10 good pictures of the rams. The other apisto well he's a bit of a poser so I just took about 5 pics of him all which were decent but this one was my favorite :p The white cloud picture to be honest was an accident picture  I accidently hit the button and it took a picture..then when I was trying to get pictures of them they were all blurry and dark so sometimes you get great shots without even trying.

I guess just experiement. My boyfriend can't take pictures of the fish to save his life. I just dont think he experiments enough and gives up too quickly whereas I dont mind sitting in front of my aquariums for an hour trying to take good pictures.

Sometimes my fish try and hide but I just try and be calm and "pretend" I'm not doing anything. Like what are your hiding for I'm just sitting here taking pictures of the wallpaper silly

The encyclopedia idea is cool...you should see my fish folder it's probably got thousands of fish pictures since I started keeping fish here in Sweden last year. I try and just keep the better ones. It's a lot of fun looking back on your first tanks thinking to yourself what was I doing? :X

Anyways just have some patience and keep trying and you'll get the hang of taking good pictures in no time :D

I have an Olympus 5000ZOOM. I am way out of my depth and haven't a clue. I finally discovered the Zoom this summer, but as yet I can't get a close enough zoom to see the fish and it not get blurry. So I went back to trying to get up close.

I have stopped trying for some time. One reason is that I can't find the USB cord. Also as you say I realize it will be time comsumming, and I've not been there yet.

There have been a couple of times when I started to go get the camera because some fish was posing for me. Like twiice one of my very shy cories that I was still trying to ID came up to the glass while I was sitting watching and just posed for me, turning around every so often so I could study him at different angles. Then I decided that rather than capturing the moment , I would just lose it. So I just relaxed and enjoyed it. :) I found his picture after that on jj's.

Someday I will take a day and read all rhe directions and try all the options and keep doing it every day so I don't forget.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

Great pics. Loooooooove the Apisto!
Blue Rams are awesome also. Two males?

Ok, Elisabeth, I ordered a USB replacement for my camera. In order to save a few $ I will have to wait for it to be shipped slooow. I get it in a month or two. But I may start practicing, and you will have a student.
