Some LFS people are stupid.

Just came home after looking at fish in a pet shop a couple of towns away, and was telling the lady what fish I have in my 4ft tank because I was trying to work out what to put in there later on, this is what she said...

Electric yellows grow to this big(she held her hands out and it was about 30 centimetres apart)

She tried to tell me Tiger barbs grow at least as long as my hand and fingers (the long part from wrist to fingertips long).

She also tried to tell me I can't put much in my tank because I have cichlids and they are aggressive, 1 Kribensis, 3 African Butterfly cichlids and 2 Electric Yellows aren't exactly a menangerie of vicious cichlids and this is what I told her I have.

Oh, and these fish will eat anything I put in the tank once they get to these supposed sizes..

My brother had 3 Chiclids, they started attacking his fighting fish, so he took one back to the lfs, then the other 2 started doing the same, so he quarantined them, and one killed the other, so he took the remainding chiclid back to the lfs, and they put it back in the tank with the original chichlid he had previously taken back, and within 5 mins, the original one had killed the one he had just taken back....

So i guess some chichlids can be vicious

All Cichlids can be vicious, its what sets them apart from most other fish. Even the smallest dwarf Cichlid will stake out a territory which it will protect from other fish and if it is a pair with fry to protect then they will take on predators many times their size to defend their brood. Cichlids do not make great community fish, at best they can be used as the feature species of a tank and then have the other fish added around them as clean up crew and dither fish, i.e Corys, plecs and tetras.

Yes, well, I know the woman that runs the local fish place (a very nice place) and she told me about a nightmare customer that insisted that she wanted tiger barbs for her fancy goldfish in a fifty-five gallon. Well, after about ten minutes of trying to get the lady to not buy them she gave up and sold her the fish. Needless to say a day or two later the woman called the store and was freaking out that the barbs were ripping her goldfish apart (her words) and had already killed something like two of them. Then she wanted her money back when she brought back the fish.

I'd rather put up with stupid people to buy the fish from than having to sell to stupid people.





Lol, just imagine what trouble she would have been in if tiger barbs really did grow as big as your hand....

i think uneducated would be a better term. Most people who work in pet stores work there because they think its easy. lol - the only LFS we had here is a prime example. A few years back I was searching for water softener pillows and when I went in and asked about them the reply I recieved was - "oh, we dont know anything about the fish or the fish stuff - we just work here." Needless to say, they sell bird, dog and cat stuff now.

I know how they can be. When I went to my lps they took this oscar from a person this oscar is about 6" to 8" long and about 5" tall and they put it in a 10g tank until it gets sold.
