Hi

a little back story to the fish. i bought them as red honey dwarf gouramis, but i dunno if they're just called red honey gouramis?

anyway, i bought a pair, around christmas time, not entirely sure when, and a couple of months later the female died. the male became withdrawn and kept hiding behind the filter, so i decided to get him a mate. when i went to the shop, they had 3 left, so i took them all, as they were a bit too young to sex. the older male chased them for a day or so, but now they get on great :)

it also turns out that i have 2 males and 2 females, so that worked out rather well, lol.

after whitespot killed all but 7 fish in our other tank, we thought maybe we could try breeding the red honeys, as they are such beautiful, colourful and sociable fish, and would look great in the other (bigger) tank. the pair we had originally had tried breeding, but obviously the female died.

lo and behold last night i noticed 2 of the younger gouramis dancing around each other, and the male doing that U shape around the female - another breeding pair, woohoo!! :good:

now i have a few questions

i read for breeding purposes they have to be mature, how old would that be? surely if they are trying to mate, they are mature, no?

also read the female has to have eggs (obviously, lol) and i think she does, but have posted this pic of her, to see if i'm correct. not exactly sure how fat she would be with eggs, tbh. ps, i know the glass needs cleaned on the outside, lol!

if we are going to go ahead and try to breed them properly, we'd move them to another tank, does this have to be a specific size?
i read you put the female in first, and the male a little while after, so he doesn't attack her. do you still have to do this if they are a pair trying to breed?

i have looked around on the web, but can't find anything specific to breeding these gouramis, and i'm not sure if all gouramis are the same...

my male :) notice his top fin, it was damaged like that when we got him, but it has grown some.

i get funny looks from my family, as i talk to them  and they always come to the front of the tank if i go near it, and i'll stroke them through the glass and they use their feelers to stroke back, lmao, it's so cool!! so yeah, a bigger tank full of these gouramis would be awesome! :D
