I just moved my 'girls' to their new tank, and just caught one of them flareing like a male, do females ever flare with the 'hood' or is it just males? If the fish is a male its in with 4 females. Ive never seen the fish do it before, but have just noticed that the fins are longer than the others.

Yes female bettas flare just like males. The ones that I’ve had don’t really have large “hoodsâ€￾ as you put it. But they do extend their gills and “displayâ€￾. They are most likely just establishing who the dominate female is. But please keep an eye on them, things can still go wrong in an all female tank. They are still feisty little ladies. ;)

So if you see one girl picking on the others more, or causing any real harm you may need to be ready to take her out.

thank you. Im keeping an eye on them not 100% sure if this one is male or female, will find out im sure.

Does the suspected male have an ovipositor? The best way to sex bettas is not by their physical traits, since there are short finned males and long finned females, nor by their behavior, since some males and passive and some females are rabidly aggressive. The best method, though there are even some exceptions to this, is to seek out the small, protruding white 'dot' on the underbelly of the fish, close to the ventral fins. Almost all bettas with an ovipositor are females, but some males for whatever reason do manifest genital deformities that look much like an ovipositor (though the "dot" is usually much less pronounced than in females).

ive been trying to see, there is a dot which I thought was an ovipositor, but its def smaller compared to some of the other females. Im very confused with this fish!
