Hey guys, I've been lurking these forums for about three weeks but just decided to sign up. I need some advice, and all input is appreciated. First, some backstory.

On July 7th, I set up my 10 US Gallon tank, filled it with gravel, plants, etc and got the cycle going the next day by purchasing 3 Rosy Tetras (Petco Sale, .99 each). I know I should have gone fishless, but they seem to be doing fine (all very active and eat well). About 3 days ago, my mom, trying to be nice, bought me a dwarf gourami so I just put it into the tank (readings were...Ammonia - 0ppm | Nitrite - 2ppm and dropping ) instead of driving an hour and a half to where she bought it. He seems to be doing fine (very active and eating well).

Here's where the advice is needed. I recently acquired a 30 US Gallon tank and I am going to put it where my 10 gallon was, in the basement, and move the 10 gallon into the living room, upstairs. Now, I'm not sure on how to do this the most efficent way, while making the cycling of the 30 gallon go as fast as possible.

My initial thoughts were to take 50% of the water out of the 10 gallon, move it upstairs (two people), reconnect it and replace it with 5 gallons of new water, and put in a new filter cartridge. Then, set up the 30 gallon, fill it with 5 gallons of cycled water, insert the old cartridge from the first tank into the new filter, and begin aquascaping while waiting for the cycle to complete. How does this sound? Would I need to buy a few fish to put in the 30 gallon to act as a source of ammonia to support the old bacteria? Any estimates on how long the cyle would take? All advice is appreciated :)

That sounds like a good start. It shypould speed the cycle up. There are a couple of posts here with cycling in title where people have given some great advice on fishless cycling. Check them out and you should be able to get up and running pretty quickly.
