does anyone have any advise on softening up water in my bettas tank? i know my city has hard water, great for my comunity tank when i redo it, however not so good for my new betta! just looking for a bit of advise on softening this up for him.

also is twice a week ok for water change on a non-filtered 2.5gal

If your just keeping betta splendens then your be fine with hard water, they are very easy to care for in the hobby as long as you keep the pH stable.

Easyiest way to sofen the water......
  • Collect rain water (in a city though this may have some polluation though)
  • Buy a dehumidifier, the water collecter is very soft.
  • Buy R.O. water from a shop
With all though you should mix with tap water, or use buffer's to add chemicals back to the water which is needed by the fish.

I had a lot of problems keeping the water ph stable with the buffers, I found it easier just to use water as is. I do know bog wood will make the water softer naturally.
