I just have to vent about this....

At lunch today I checked out a nearby petstore I saw advertised in the phone book as the best thing next to sliced bread.

It was absolutely terrible! I was so sad and so angry I could have cried. There were a dozen or so tanks sitting on stands not even close to level. The tanks were dirty and one tank did not even have the filter operating and there was a scum on the surface of the water. The poor little fishies just hovering almost lifeless in the water.

There was a fish net laying on the very dirty floor which I'm sure will be picked up and used to capture some lucky fish to leave that place.

And that's just the fish....poor birdies, too. If it wasn't so miserably cold here (it was -2 degrees Fahrenheit at noon) I would have opened their doors and let them all free!

Are these stores regulated? Is there an agency I can call?

Wow, I've never seen a fish store that bad.. I guess the ones near me take care of their pets.

Yes, it's slim pickins around here. Another lfs I went to recently, told me I should replace my bio wheels annually!

lol, What I know now I'd slap that guy. :) I wish mine was dark brown with a bunch of bacteria :) Mine is only 18 days old.

 Yes, I know what you mean! Makes me think of a game show:

"Contestant #1, what is your idea of beautiful?"

Reply by contestant: "Well, Alex, I'd have to say beautiful is a brown, fuzzy-looking biowheel loaded with bacteria."

lol, that was good. A brown bacteria covered bio-wheel a day keeps the ammonia and nitrites away. :)

Jeez ... thats just not good business. I'd call the SPCA, the better business bureau and the local chamber of commerce and whoever would listen to me for that matter. The fish might not get their attention but the birds should. (stupid, I know, that fish are somehow viewed as "lesser" creatures :grr: )

They are probally viewed as "lesser" creatures because they cost less.

Yeah, some people are horrid. When their 23rd goldfish or whatever dies they're like, "Oh damn, now I have to go all the way to the pet store to pick up another one. Oh well, at least they're only $2 fish, right?" Makes me sick. IMO, the more helpless an animal, all the more reason to treat it with respect.

2 bucks for a goldfish! Wow! In the Land Down Under goldfishies are expensive. In my neck of the woods. You can buy 2" commets for around 22 cents. Fantails about the same size around 75 cents. That is still no excuse for bad animal husbandry though.

Lol, in the Land Down Under all fishies are expensive. At least where I live, anyway. We have about 3 decent LFS's here on the coast, but they are all overpriced. So I drive to Brisbane, which takes an hour and a half, but everythings cheaper and they have the best fish stores.
