Well, I think I kinda knew it was time that my rescuing ill-treated Bettas came to bite me on the rear, because I lost my newest rescued boy today :-(

Got him home on Thursday last week and he seemed to pick up so so fast and was even eating (in the pet shop he just was flopped at the bottom of his tiny pot), and this morning he even made a great bubblenest. Few hours later and he's gone :( i'm so upset. I hadn't even named him properly yet :-(

*sigh* the worst thing is that I know how hurt I am right now to have lost him, yet i'll go out and do the same thing again. Heartache really sucks.

Sorry about your loss. :-(
Unfortunately this is a major problem with "rescue" bettas. Sometimes they have problems even worse than what is seen to the naked eye... Be proud that you gave him a nice home for his last week of life though, and I'm sure there's another boy out there just waiting for you to take him home!

He went out with dignity. Rather than in that stupid cup. Unfortunatly when we "rescue" these ill treated, we are supporting the LFS that is doing this ill treating. Kind of a stupid circle. Not criticizing you at all! Good on you for trying to help those poor guys. Just sad that the stores dont care enough to care.

this is something I keep doing. But, the shops still keep getting them in and folks will still buy them. Good on you for rescuing him he had some time in clean water and being looked after. :good:

That's so sad, but echo the others that you did a great thing by letting him have a week or so in a better environment.

I 'rescued' 4 Keyhole cichlids and a female Black Phantom from Pets at Home a few months ago. They were all in a clearance tank for 75p each. I lost 3 Keyholes within days of each other, though one Keyhole and the Phantom are doing fabulously. I feel I did a good job in letting those three have some time in a nice tank before they passed on. Unfortunately they must have been too far gone to make it.
I had to resist the temptation to rescue a blue Betta in there the other day, who looked very miserable. I went in again a couple of days ago for some stuff and he was gone.

Thanks guys, still so sad. I think my family think i'm crazy because I was so upset  lol. Crazy for bettas maybe, hehe.

I really do get what you've said, about buying them only allows the pet shop to buy more, but it just kills my heart to see such a beautiful creature like that.

Might sound stupid but i'm sure Kai (my other betta) knew I was upset, cos he "sat" on one of his plants watching me last night, and when I moved around my bedroom, he moved in his tank so he could watch me. Ha, maybe I am crazy

Sorry about your cichlids, Grumpygourami :-(

so sorry ~ i can relate to your hurt ~ just before christmas my rescued betta named "luna" died ~ i was lucky to have had him for 10 months and was very attached to him ~ i have since gone and "rescued" 4 others
i am sure your little guy was thrilled with his new environment and that he left happy!!

Awww... I'm thinking of you. I know how much it hurts to lose a special rescue. I lost my Guava just a week or so ago, one of the prettiest bettas I've ever set eyes on and such a character... I swear they understand what you do for them taking them home, the change in rescued bettas is so incredible. I know he was happier with you.
