well, i went to my lfs yesterday, and i was going to buy these glass fish, cause they were ultra cool looking and they had these very bright colors on the top of them, almost neon! then i went to look at waht type they were, and how much they cost, then i read: Painted Glass Fish! i got sorta mad. why do people paint fish any ways? wouldn't it kill them?

Yes people dye fish all the time, if you do a search on the forum there are like thousands of threads of dyed fish and if you look in the hybrid section in the pinned articles they tell you how they do it and the such like.
Yes dying fish is immoral, cruel and inhuman and wrong and dyed fish have high mortality rates, but the majority of fish that get dyed only cost pennys anyways so alota people don't care.

Dont take LFS ppl advice too seriouse some of them dont even know what they r talking about.

Someone should make a pinned topic saying, "We know painting fish is wrong and shouldn't be done." Seems to be a thread everyday about it heh. :)

At least once a day. We know it's bad, we don't buy them and discussing it here is mostly preaching to the converted. But you have to remember an LFS is in business to make money, not to make sure the fish are treated properly and healthy or that their owners are responsible keepers. Whenever you find such a LFS, it's a rare but valued exception but definitely not the norm.

if anything is labled "fruit..." or "assorted fruit..." they are most likely dyed.

Also, glass fish are plain fish, they have no color, so they paint them to make them appealing. They are nice looking fish, but they don't catch eyes. SO that goes back to the LFS doing it for money. I believe they'd do anything for money, and it's not right! It makes me mad too. You should really read the pinned topic on how they do it, it'll burn you up!

My LFS sells dyed glass fish. They rarely ever have glass fish but when they do, they're never dyed. In fact the only dyed fish they get are Oscars and Parrots.

I had to make a lady I work with change her desktop image since it was a picture of jellybean parrots (like red, blue, orange, green etc.). She was wondering why I was avoiding her office then I told her. She was just as horrified as everyone else here is

I'm happy to say I have yet to come across a store selling dyed fish. I hope never to do so. Nothing would make me give them my business if I saw them. Would they do it to a cat because it's fur is white? That'd put them out of business real fast, so why is it allowed to happen to fish?? Makes me very very angry. :grr:
Hugs,
P.

the only dyed fish i have come across are parrots, and thats mainly in places like pets at home not your proper fish shops...

Every single pet store I've been to has dyed fish of one type or annother. White Skirt Tetras, Glass Fish, Blood Parrots, Gourami's, Oscars. It's kind of sad but I can't buy from anywhere else, in Vermont the supply is not exactly infinite. :/

I'd say the majority of LFS actually sell dyed fish, it's sad.

Ironically, the manager of a chain LPS near me refuses to carry died or painted fish (other stores in the chain do) for the reasons everyone here hates them. She has the attitude of fish are pets, not decorations, and is all for the humane treatment of fish. The employees there know absolutely nothing.

If I go to a LFS (45 min away) where the employees know something, they sell many types of painted and dyed fish.

Go figure.

Frank, if youre close enough, whithin 2 hours or so, you can cross the river to Lebanon NH to Lebanon Pet and Aquarium Center. IME they are knowledgeable, have a great selection and care about their fish. I live an hour away from there an i occasionally take trips there....just for fish.

I have yet to see any dyed gouramis or, heaven forbid, oscars. I pity the employee working the day I ever see that.
