so im going to be upgradeing to a 55 gallon very over filtered tank and im looking into getting more malawi.i am looking for a fish to take the reins on dominance though too.
so i was looking at
venustus
livingstoni
yellow tail aceis
and some haps or peacocks.

i currentlyhave a red zebra male who has dominance but just pushes it too far.he has killed most of my cichlids!
i recantly baught a few fish to restock and they are still small
2 female exasperatus(wanna get a male)
2 male red top zebras.(wanna take 1 back and get a female)
2 female kenyi(wanna get a male)
and 1 what is thought to be a demasoni but is still about an inch long.

so help me pick and choose some fish.i would also take any fish sugesstions.
thanksand
FFF

oh and also blue dolphin????

With aggressive mbuna in a 55 I wouldn't recommend peacocks because they are very peaceful for the most part and will let dominate males run all over them. Haps could be a problem too considering a lot of the get large for Malawi fish. I have a female Nimbochromis Polystigma and I love her, but she is going to get 9 inches or so (I got the 90 gal for her really). Blue dolphins are haps that get to be like 9 inches. It all really depends on the dimensions of the tank. If it is long AND more than 18 inches front to back then it would be fine. They are a mildly aggressive cichlid that far well with mbuna from what I understand. Nimbochromis venustus, another hap, also get to be nearly 11 inches long. Nimbochromis licingstoni is another larger hap, but is aggressive enough to put up with mbuna. I love my acei, make sure to get 5-6 because they do well in groups. My dominant male zebra is a pain too, it is just how they are I guess!
Hope that helps :good:

yup that does.guess its just a zebra thing.
what fish do you reccomend getting to take over?

What do you mean by take over? If you want a TRUE king of the tank look into the Melanchromis; the problem being they kill everyone else (depending on the fish). If you want an aggressive Malawi tank then you really need to make sure all the fish are aggressive because the mildly aggressive or less aggressive species will most certainly have a grime fate. :good: I am expecting some props from Ferris  I'm giving ya a break!

Labeotropheus Fuelleborni "marmalade cat"
very very dominant
mine was ina lip lock with a adult convict yesterday, after 4 hours in the tank it was relegated to another tank on her own for now, she had all fish running for cover!!
2 fronts
convict
even my syno!!!    crazy fish!! - good loking though.

do you think that my male kenyi(lombardoi)will police the tank????

My male kenyi is kind of passive. I know that is odd, but he just kind of sticks to himself...

My Kenyi is also rather placid. Why not have a nice tank of Saulosi. have the radio right and one of the males willbe alpha.. its just a thought as a 55G for aggressive mbuna isnt that good when it comes to places to retreat to.

i dont really like species tanks.and in my area, its hard to even find cichlids!
what fish would you reccomend to police?i heard recently about a chipokea policing very well.

Chipokae will do more than police, it will arrest and put other fish on the electric chair so to speak, they are the most aggressive and deadly mbuna from what I understand. I am going to be getting rid of mine shortly!

yeah but where was it where we talked about this and someones chipokea is policing?

Ferris! When did you change your avatar! The picture of your Demon was your avatar the whole time I have been a member!

P.S. I am going to have a couple IDs for you on Monday for two peacocks I got so get ready! :good:

ah there the lil bugger is.i know males are the "true killers" but what about a female?do you think they will be as violente?

Here is just a suggestion but what about a Ps. elongatus, Chewere. I have a breading pair but the male has really taken charge of the tank. Before the Chewere showed up I was having problems with my Male Yellow Lab going after all the other tank mates but now he has settled down and there seems to be a little more order.
