Anyway, what I wanted to ask was: are fish bad for the tank? Because we appear to have quite a number in our tank...

If you mean, "Are snails bad for tanks" then it depends on the type of snail, some are some are not. Post this question in the "Invertebrates + Amphibians Forum" section for a better response.
