snails

I see snails sold at the LFS, but I see people here asking how to get rid of snails. I was under the impression that snails were benneficial to a tank. Are they not?

It depends on a lot of things; the type of snail, type of tank and the person. Some people hate snails that others love. I have Apples and Malaysian Trumpets that normally people hate but I like for keeping my sand clean.

Hi new to this got snails, after some info, best fish to get rid
Clown loaches, pakistani loaches are probably your best bets for a FW tank. The clowns get large and like to be in groups of 3 +, so unless you have a large tank dont go there. The pakistani or yoyo loach gets around 3-4 inches usually. HTH :)

If you don't have many, stick your paw in and pick them out... easiest way.

I have 2 snails in my tank, stoaways from some plants... they do no harm, so I don't fuss about them much.

Yes I agree with tstenback, the loaches do a good job. But if you want a fishless alternative, get a slice of cucumber (it floats), and set it in the water. Get to bed and in the morning, the snails should be on the slice of cucumber! So just toss it and thats that!

I find fresh lettice works best for me..also if you really want to get the little critters best is not to wait for the morning light , but to check your lettice while its still dark, as the darn things hide.

They don't talk about this too much, but jack dempsey eat snail. And some other african cichlids do too. Best at eating them is loaches. what's an fw tank?

Thanks, Cute puppy in your pic... Isn't every tank (just about) a fw, so then shouldn't would only need to specify what our tank is if it's a sw? Sorry for off subject.

Clown loaches will get to be very large almost a foot long. Yoyos will also eat snails and they max out at 4 inches. Good luck with whatever you do! :D
