Okay so i have a 10 gallon planted tank, some of the plants came with snails attached, i thought it was cool....at first...now the are freaking everywhere....seriously, everywhere and egg clusters EVERYWHERE. what do i do to get rid of these snails? i also have shrimp in the tank and i dont want them to die! There are assassin snails mixed in and i was under the impression that the assassins would eat the others, but nope!

Snails will only grow in population to the level of the food.  You must be overfeeding your tank, or have lots of algae for them to feed on.  Go with a 'black out' on the tank for a few days (the plants will be fine with this, the algae will not).  Then stop feeding the tank for a few days, after doing a thorough gravel cleanup.

You can also speed up the process by actually manually removing as many snails as you see.  You can use a 'lettuce leaf' trap as well.  Hang a lettuce leaf on the side of the glass over night.  In the morning remove it and any snails attached.   The manual method will only work on the ones you see and the lettuce will only work on those who come to the lettuce.  The rest need to run out of food, and become food for the assassins.

I personally don't like all the snails in my tank either, so i pick all that I can during weekly cleanings.  I don't know if the snail traps work, but I saw some on eBay.  Probably just easier for you to remove manually in your 10 gallon.

Hi Alex,
I had the same problem. I bought a few plants and within a few weeks pest snails were everywhere. I bought some Assassins and a Turkey baster. You mentioned you have some Assassins so all you need is a Turkey baster.
The Assassins will eat the pest snails in the gravel and help you there. You can help by using the Turkey baster and suck the pest snails off the walls of your tank. It'll take a weeks but you will win. You'll get days when you'll have no snails on the walls and the next there'll be loads so keep doing it . I used to clean up twice a day when I first started but now after a few weeks I may do it be once a week before I do the water change.
