I am assuming you mean african "mbuna" cichlids? If so, yes 55 gallon would be fine. They are fresh water fish that can thrive in mildly salted water.

lol at wharf aquatics they have a mbuna display and it says 'these fish are not marine, they are mbuna, ask about them' or something

EVERYONE that looks at my tank ask if they are salt water... given they don't know much about fish except what they saw in Finding Nemo.

haha finding nemo ! my fish watch that moive, i think they just like the changing colours or something hahaah

is there any type of fish that are harder to care for? dumb question i know there is, but for my first tank is there any type of fish that you love and would say to get?

I would say electric yellow and some red zebras would make a nice coloration , you could also add some blue cobalt zebas for even more color.
