I may be able to persuade the oh to get another tank. If I can I'd like a couple of sevs. The problem is the space where we could put another sill only allow another the same size as our current one... 33 US Gallons.

Would I be able to get a couple of rotkiels or similar in something that size?

If so, anything I could put in with them?

If not what size tank would I need?

im afraid not mate 75g min for a single sev for 2 youre realisticly looking at min of a 4x2x2

Rotkiels usually max out around 8", unlike hero efasciatus (Red spot, Gold, Green for example), even so a 33g tank as Mark says, isnt large enough even for one. For Rotkiel Severums or Hero Severus, a 75g would be ok for a breeding pair, but for the other species like efasciatus you would need a 100g for them to be comfortable as they can reach 12".

shame, i don't think theres a chance of going that big...

i may be able to push up to 50G, is there any "big" fish like a sev that would go nicely in either a 33 or 50G?

the 33G is just over 2.5 feet long so anything thats about 6 inches that would it nicely in there in a nice pair (or trio) that is similar to the sevs?

how about a pair of sajicas? smaller than sevs and beautifuly coloured . or maybe nics?

*using google*

the sajicas look good, and another site said 100 litres is enough for one, but then went on to say that you'd need 215 litres to have a pair.... don't understand that, unless it's a breeding thing and they get even more territorial,

a site i found talking about nics said they grow to 10", so bigger than the small types of severum...

will be looking into the sajicas more now, thank you

really? i didnt think nics got that big? oh well every days a school day  i think sajicas would look nice .

A 55g would be fine for a pair of Rotkeils, they take about 4 years to get to 8" and never get beyond that.

what about 53G??? I'm guessing it's close enough to be OK... since if we get another tank, it'd be nice to have a matching one,and get the size up from the current roma 125, and get the 200...

I have an adult female Heros Severus in my tank and thats a Roma 240 (I think thats the one your thinking of as a matching to your other tank) I would only have a single specimen in that size tank though, I think a rotkeil would be okay in there as its 65g but the community around them would be need to be planned accordingly.

I have a female nic with my sev as well, the males will get to 10 inches but the females will stay smaller around 5-6 inches the females are the ones with the blue faces - although Im starting to want to split my central americans from my south americans.

But if you could get the roma 240 you could do a lone severus or rotkeil with things like cupid cichlids, guinacaras or even apistos or bolivian rams, angels could work as well.

As for smaller ones for a 33g there is nothing that comes close IMO I tried really hard to work out what could compare but I just gave up lol.

One other thing to add though, once you start wanting bigger fish you will want even bigger fish then more fish tanks haha!

I'm already wanting more tanks, or just one big enough for everything... you know, a few thousand gallons might house a couple of things....

Bought a fluval 205 for the roma 125 today, and while there, we also got (actually, my wife got..) a baby biorb, since it'll fit on her bedside table, and all she wants is a betta... it's a little on the small side but its a hell of a lot better than in the shop or even where it might be housed elsewhere... but she's waiting to set that upso we've got enough mature media to seed it nicely.

oh,and the size up is the 200... but the 240 would be nice, except theres nowhere to put one... I'm sure i'll worry less about that when MTS sinks in properly.

the other thing i'm looking at is discus, but obviously the same problems exist there too...

I believe discus is doable in a 200? I think theres a journal of someone starting one somewhere but not sure?

Good idea on the external for the 125 did the move go okay?

just installed the 205, went ok, fits so much more media... tomo i'm gonna take the media out of the internal (which is still running) and put it in the external so i can get rid of the box in the tank... just wanted to get it set-up and working today before worrying about swapping media, (just in case it didn't work or something)

so,

you think discus would work in a 200? how many? 1or 2?

discus are shoaling cichlids a bigger group is better. especially if they are young. stocking rule of thumb seems to vary anything from 5 to 10 gallons per fish depending on which site/profile you read .
i should point out tho that this reply is not based on experience ,just from reading up on various discus websites ( im setting up a discus tank soon)

yeah, in the species index here it says 10G per fish with a at least 5 or 6 fish, so minimum tank size is 50G,

since the 200 is 53 gallons, it should be ok with 5 discus and a small clean-up crew, maybe a couple of shrimp and a couple of pygmy cories...

also the roma 200 is roughly 4 x the length of a discus long, and 1.5 x the length wide. which fits in fairly well with those "rules", could be a little longer, but it'spretty close. and even without anything else in there will LOOK full, which is one of my goals, you could fill a tank with neon tetras and still never see them.

EDIT:

how does this sound?
5 - discus
25 - neon tetra
1 - zebra pleco

puts it to 105% stocked on aqadvisor, which i think is off a little here...
