I have a 20g long that currently houses 6 peppered, 3 delphax and one ambiacus cory, plus oodles of red cherry shrimp. The tank is lacking interest higher up in the water column, and I'm looking for suggestions for something that would do well with what I have.

Rummy nose tetras are my favorite shoaling/schooling fish!  I'd recommend them.  They would love all the swimming space too since it's a 20 long.

Cheers!

Rummy nose tetras might be a little big for a 20L since they are both pretty long and very active.  But a school of Hengel's Rasboras, Trigonostigma hengeli, would be perfect.  They are beautiful and school very nicely.  Also they should stay in the mid to upper section of the tank.  And should be fine in moderately acidic water - better, say, than T. espei. Only downside is that they are asian and not south american, if that matters in your choice.

I'd do some liver bearers like platies or guppies.
Maybe a smaller gourami like honey.
Most tetras will also work nicely.
:)

how about some cardinals? they can do well and they have a very beautiful color pattern? or you may also try microdevario kubotai!

I do love tetras (my 55g is full of them) but I'm wondering about the safety of my shrimp? Anyone had experience with any of these paired with shrimp?

It's a 20 gallon but still a nice suggestion.

Was this at moi? I have the same tank.  As I believe you know. Just thinking that 30 inches many be a little short for a fully school of active two inch fish.

Lampeyes?

I'm not sure how the shrimp would treat them but they are very peaceful themselves. Mine are in with cories and both are fine together.

I guess I'm not so worried about the cory as the shrimp.

Sorry, r.w. Lost my head there for a minute. I'm just used to seeing "20L" as meaning 20 liter.

Celestial Pearl Danios?
Chilli Rasbora?
Cherry Barbs?

If u lived closer I'd donate you 12 black finned tetra because I'm switching to a brackish tank

I could add those to the 10 longfins I have.

Maybe you could do a few swordtails? They aren't too active like guppies or some tetras, but they add plenty of life to the upper bit of a tank. I loved mine. I'm hoping to get another swordtail tank soon.
