my 3 year old son has really started taking interest in my fish tanks so i decided to get him a small tank its about 5 gallon do u think this size tank would be ok for a few guppys, if so how many.
thanks :)

An inch of fish per gallon of water is a good rule to go by. So in this case about 5 guppies (don't count the length of the tail).

Keep in mind even a little tank needs a filter and heater and all that good stuff that you have in your big tank ... only smaller.

Good luck!

hi, yeah gups are great fish, although adorably thick:) yeah about 6 would be good. I generally dont go by the inch by litre rule. As long as you do small regular water changes you can almost double what the inch rule rays. But yeah a heater and filter definatley and let it cycle. But remember have 1 male per 2-3 females as they will pester them like crazy. Or just stick to same sex tank. Although males are more colourful. Good luck!

thanks very much :)
i have a heater and filter and can use some filter media from another tank to cycle it quicker. i was thinking of giving him 2 females and 1 male.
i already have some breeding in another tank, i initially bought them because id moved my community fish into another tank ready to get a couple of bichirs but the lfs couldnt get any so he told me if i took something like them i could breed them and when they get some bichirs in he,d buy them back and id save some money and my tank wouldnt be empty while i wait. but i now seem to be becoming attached and might keep them but that would mean having to re think all my plans :)

The inch per gallon rule is just a vague guideline for beginners, and in a 5g tank 5 fish is plenty. 2 females and 1 male will give you more fry than you can possibly imagine.

In a tiny 5 gallon tank, the 5 guppy males will make s nice stocking. They will not overload the tank and you will not need to deal with fry the way you would with a mix of males and females. Another nice display would be 6 to 8 male endlers. I keep only wild type endlers in a mixed sex colony but some nice males would go a long way to driving interest by a youngster.

I`ve got a 28 l tank how many guppies would i be able to keep in there?

Have just read that tank needs to be at least 65 l to keep guppies,i`m confused now as someof the members from the forum says that they can be kept in a 5 gallon tank ??

I keep my breeding colony in a nominal 37 litre tank that has about 30 litres of water plus the substrate. I also have that tank stuffed with java moss to protect fry so the adults really only get to use the top few inches of the water. To my eyes they seem happy as a lark.
