im planning on stocking my 55 galloner (after the 75 is done cycling) with the following fish: 1 opaline gourami, 2 angels, 1 female betta, 8 pygmy corys, 1 apple snail, 4 zebra otos and 1 or 2 preacock gudgeons. the tank will be planted and have a fluval 304 canister filter. my queston is what small shoaling fish could be added, i was thinking congo/cardinal tetras or long finned zebra danios and other things like that. any suggestions?

Mixing the betta with an opaline gourami may be a risky decision. Kep a close eye on them.

As for which schooling fish to add, those you mentioned would work fine. Alternatively, harlequin rasboras are an excellent schooling fish which will shoal very tightly under most circumstances. I also like black phantom tetras very much. Whatever you choose, just make sure it isn't anything very small and neon-shaped as the angels may eat them.

I'd say go with the Danios for two reasons. Congo Tetras aren't small. They grow to 3 inches. As well, Cardinals are slender and smaller tetras that the angels may be inclined to eat. Some people have had different experiences. I'm just saying what happens 75% of the time. For a reference to fish size and a few other ideas, check out The-Wolf's page on Tetra sizes

Edit: Oops confused cardinals with neons. Cardinals should be fine too :)

If you can get ahold of them, dwarf pencils should work just fine. They tend to be a little more sensitive than your average schooling fish, so keep your water very clean.
