I just went and checked on my tank that I set up in my high school library. I added jungle val and some anubis on Monday, and fluval root tabs on Tuesday. Today I noticed that some of the Vallis is turning brown and there is slimy stuff all over the sand! I will not have time to do a water change today, but I can test my water here in an hour or so. It’s a 10g tank with sand for the substrate and no inhabitants yet. I have a clear LED and a red LED that are on for around 6 hours a day.

Might be the capsule that the fertilizer was in.

Lack of nutrients. What lights do you use? What temperature is the water.
The thermometer is set to 73. I overjudged the water temp when I did a change earlier so it went up to 77. I have a red LED and a clear LED. I’ll have to find the order history to remember what wattage for the clear one, but I do remember that it was recommended by people on here.

A slight change in water temperautre is fine for fish and plants.

The brown on the Vallis leaves is brown algae. Wipe it off with your fingers or a sponge.

The small plants with roundish dark green leaves looks like it might have blue green algae on. Or it could just be the colour of the elaves. Can we get a photo of those plants but from the front of the tank?

The sand looks a bit grey and they would indicate anaerobic bacteria. Stir the sand up regularly and try to remove things that rot (dead leaves, fish food, etc).
