Just wanted to bring up this topic and see how everyone's fish sleep... because the other day I went to turn the lights on, and they had been sleeping because the room had been relatively dark that day... and for about 10 minutes I thought they were dying and was ready to do a massive water change! The fry were like, stuck against the walls of their net breeder, the platies in the tank were just in the plants, hanging there stiffly... I thought I was going to lose them! But then they woke up and jumped back to life! Is that a normal sleep pattern?

My fish do take a while to wake up in the morning. I guess they're not morning fish! ;)
I remember being a little freaked out by their stillness when I first got them but now I know it's just their way. Shouldn't be anything to worry about, in your case either. :)

My Tiger barbs will hang in the top corners of my tank with there heads pointed down....theres nothing wrong with them...just sleepin...And the first time it happened to me i was kinda freaked

p.s Nisha...Im from Whitby :D

Same here. Then I finally got used to their habits and it's kinda funny to watch because when some are sleeping the others want to play chase... They've all gotten used to each other now though and all have their own sleep habits.

Cool! Lots of my family lives by Ajax. Nice to meet someone from my neck of the woods..err... burbs. :D

My fish have strange sleeping habits too. I used to have a Chinese Algae Eater who would only sleep under the ornament. It used to dig all the way under and sleep in there. It was a bit :S.

my cardinals bunch up in a group and they lose almost all of their colour, and my discus just huddle up in the corner together. i havnt noticed wat my cat fish do.

I don't think they 'sleep' right through. I've heard that fishes use only one half of their brain to stay alert, and to watch out for opportunities, while the other 'sleeps'.

ive heard of dolphins doing this, so they wake up if they are about to be attacked and have a chance to get away.

I thought they just took occasional naps throughout the day in hideouts. They do always seem half awake though, the smallest amount of vibration seems to wake mine.

Mine are always up waiting for me in the morning.. Maybe because im the lazy one to get up! Haha

My pink gourami will lay motionless on the bottom all night and as soon as I turn the lights on it "wakes" up. Some times it take a few minutes for him to wake up though.

My silver dollars will sort of huddle together and float mid-tank with their heads slightly angled downward when they sleep .

Guppies will group together in the corners of my tanks to sleep.

Corries seem to be active 24 hours a day, always looking for food.

My pleco and weather loach are seldom seen during the day. As soon as the lights go out it's party times for them.

Yup....

seems to me that my neons and bumblebee gobies lose their colors at night.

is this possible?

oh regarding sleeping....how can you tell for sure they are sleeping? :dunno:

I saw my neons sleeping today. It's kind of strange, they were at about a 60 degree angle to the horizontal, flipping the tails to try and stay in one spot. I can't imagine it's easy, I've got so much suction on my tank right now because there are 2 filters.
