ive got sum fancy blue slate but i didnt buy it specially for fish would it be safe for an aquarium

does it have streaks running through it? if it does, it's no good.

you can also try the acid test. that's where you add a few drops of vinegar onto the slate. if it fizzes, it will raise the ph of your tank water, so is no good.

so i boil it then soak it in a cloth? Ive tested it with the vinegar and it does'nt fizz

i just put it in a big pan with a tight lid, didnt bother with cloth

if it seems ok, then just boil it and let it cool before placing it in the tank.

i have some thin roof slate id like to use as long as i can prevent sharp edges...
it has kind of gold flecks in it (metal?). should I just do the vingar test?

I don't think thats a good idea.

generaly speaking slate is inert and safe, but there are exceptions
