i got my hands on a quantity of what looks like a sort of slate its not the type you normaly see but does split down a seem it looks more coarser than the normal stuff i found a load in with some other rocks is this ok for an aquarium?

yes here they are apart from wanting a good clean this is 1 piece. have broken 2 others down and are on the boil

There is the old vinegar technique.... (never used it so read up online)
But its something like...drop a couple of splashes of vinegar onto the surface and onto any different surfaces (eg a grain of different rock etc)
leave it for a bit. If it reacts at all it will likely leach nasties into the water

Though Slate is usually ok

i did the vinegar test didnt fizzle gave them a good scrub come up ok no didnt get them from lfs gf pointed them out to me behind her work so jobs a gooden a few good clumps of slate and best bit FREE

yep they look fine mate i looks exacty the same type as mine

you live in warrington? you are only 30 mins drive from a massive slate deposit in the welsh hills, its that common round hear we use it in gardens instead of gravel and its got a lovely purple hue to it, if you ever want a nice sunday drive ill give you directions.
I use it as decor in my tank and with a nice pale gravel it looks really nice.
