But can Sailfin Mollies cross with normal platties? I'm almost certain they can but my partners sister has just got a tank and asked me if I thought her mollies were pregnant (she doesnt know which fish is which) there are two (i must admit gorgeous) silver/white male sailfin mollies and three female platties but they have a couple of babies and the female platties are pregnant again. I'm almost sure they will be crosses as there isnt an opposite sex of either fish that I could see.

I know I sound slack by asking if its possible but I just want to be 100% sure that I've told her the right thing.

Now all I need to do is get her stocking sorted etc but that wont take long.

hi,
platys and swords can mate and have young but mollys and platys dont cross breed as far as im aware,
the female platys would of already been mated before they were put into the tank. :)
ps this wont stop the mollys from trying though.

Platies and swordtails belong to the same genus (xiphophorus), they can and frequently do mate. Mollies and guppies also belong to the same genus (poecilia) and can mate, but do so less frequently (there is an interesting thread in the hybrids forum, with pics!). Mollies and platies are not closely enough related to mate. But they share the trait typical of poeciliid species of being able to store sperm for a whole series of pregnancies. A relative of mine told me once of her horror when she first found out at about the facts of life and how she consoled herself with the thought that at least she only had one sibling- so her parents had only done it twice! Well, poeciliids only have to do it once. :hey:

Ye the peeps are right, no chance of the these two crossing.

The sexual their from different genus's which genetical make it difficualt to cross but also the sexualy organ the Gonopodium are all different shapes between genesus, thus making it almost impossible to insert the packerts of spem from one genus to another.

ADRIANHD from endlers r us has crossed true endlers with a molly and got this restalt

oooh, interesting, never seen one of them before

Yeah, I have read some threads from this forum telling the same thing as some of them stated.

The picture of cross breed between endler & molly is very interesting... :)

There are few pic's out there of cross breeds, whould be good to get loads all together to give a good idea of what will cross.

Thanks guys! I knew that platies could store sperm but these have been releasing fry for the last few months (not sure how long as dont know the history of the tank) I thought they only stored it for a few months etc thats all.

Also I always thought that Balloon mollies were crosses with platties but I stand corrected.

That is very interesting information about the endler x mollies. :good:

They can store sperm for around 6 month.

I've not heard of fish producing fry afer 6 months with out a male around. However I'm sure that someone will have...
