Hi,

I have a 12g tank with 10 remaining platies juveniles ( 1 is 9 months and the others are 6 months).

Over the last few months my platies have been wasting away. The are eating well and swimming fine. They show no outward signs of being ill, they just lose weight and die. the water is changed regularly (once a week) They are fed twice a day. All water parameters are normal. No one is being bullied and there are no other fish in the tank.

I did post in the emergency section but on doing some research I have found threads on 'skinny disease and I think that is what they have.

What I would like to know is can anyone shed any further light on the subject and what if anything will help cure it.

Ta in advance

It might be internal parasites. Or TB. I wish I could help more but I know very little about fish diseases.

Internal bacteria or internal parasites are the too most likely suspects for wasting away in livebearers like platys, internal bacteria in particular is becomming increasingly common amoungst such fish. What do the fishes poo look like? Is it white, grey or stringy looking?

Well that the thing at the mo the poo looks reasonable normal

You should still keep an eye on their poop though is this is a strong indicator of their health, are any of the fishes fins "clamped" (i.e. not fully spread out, like their fins are a bit folded up or tense)?

Skinny disease in clowns has been treated by a friend of mine on another forum with flubenol 15/wormer plus.
I have seen your thread in emergencies and would suggest that along with maybe a course of octozin at the same time, if it i an internal parasite problem, that will sort it out fairly quickly

Many thanks for all your help.

I have also read that wormer plus does work in clowns but was unsure about platies, especially as these are still very young. Also I think the oldest is pregnant. However I can't just do nothing so I will give it a go.

The strange thing is they are showing no outward signs of being ill at all.

Anyway I will treat over christmas and post in the new year to let you all know what the outcome has been.

my kisser died of this about a month ago,i quarantined it for two weeks hoping the rest might give it a chance (id been told in mt lfs that there was nothing i could do for him)but he died.i was truelly gutted, its buddy seems to be missing him/her aswel. :(

Wormer plus is fine with any fish, its active ingredient is Flubenol 15, so the only damage its going to do is to the snails, which could be considered a bonus :good:
