When I got Bill, my betta, about 2 or 3 months ago, the worker dude at Petsmart said they like small bowls. Bill's bowl is about 4 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches tall. I'm having doubts. Do I need a bigger bowl?

It's getting kind of crowded in there. He's got pebbles and a marble at the bottom. There's also a little plastic palm tree in there. He has a little plastic yellow ball that floats halfway in the water and halfway out of the water, but I don't always keep the ball in there.

I also have one question: I was going to try to get him to come to my finger by sticking a little food pellet onto it. When he came near, I chickened out and moved my finger away. It doesn't hurt or anything, right?

The people at petsmart know NOTHING. Yes i'd say you need a bigger bowl, bettas dont "like" small cramped places they just happen to be able to survive in them, which is not a blessing for them considering how some people treat them :( .
And no, it wont hurt a all  . Even when i fed my giant goldfish like that it never hurt in the slightest :) .

Some bettas like big spaces, while others like small ones. I keep my male bettas in 1.5g tanks, and my female in a 1g. They all have at least one plant/ornament in the tank with them, and they seem content.

I haven't ever gotten my bettas to come to my finger, but my guppies have. And no, it doesn't hurt at all. Actually, it tickles a bit. The first time my guppies came to me like that, I giggled more than I ever have in my life.

Good luck getting him to come to you. I've had my female for about 2 days, and I'm trying to get her to come to me. So far, it's working quite well :D

He'd be happier with more space, and you'll enjoy seeing him swim around and flash his colors more, too! They make really nice looking 2.5 gallona and 5 gallon kits with everything you need except gravel and plants. I did that when I first started out with bettas, and it was so much fun watching them be able to actually move around!

Thanks everyone! :*

Wait! What if I don't have anything else to put him in at the moment? My mom won't let me put him in a jar, and she sold our old fish bowl in a garage sale a long time ago.

At the moment you can keep him in the bowl until you can get the small tank. That shouldn't be too long because 2.5g tanks are cheap. My 5.5g cost me only $15 :D
