if its anything like the one i found tonight bloody long fat and ugly, there colour is half orange half black with loads of little spines over there back , the size of the one i found tonigh was nearly 4" long and i think he could of streched bigger hes now in the sump nice and safe with the other monster i find
when small, bristleworm are harmless and actually a great addition to the system. however some can get large and when i mean large i mean well over 7 ft! A worm as large as this can easily hide unseen in a tank as small as 2ft!
THe problem is that with large wor come alrge appetites. so these worms then start looking for other things to eat. There are other types of bristleworms that are not safe but these are very rare and the usual ones you get in liverock pose no threat.
Most people blame them for killing fish but this is not possible as they have rasping teeth and cannot latch onto a fish to kill it. what people usually see is just how efficient they are because they see a worm eating a dead fish only minutes after its dead or whilst its still too weak to swim away.
My bristelworms are redish orange with purple.
... Oh! And dont touch them.. they can give a nasty sting.. e careful when handling liverock as you do not know where they are hiding.
thanks nav ive just found that for myself when i was was moving rock around, i never had a problem just picking the big ones out and putting them in the sump, but today when moving the rock i got, got it felt like a glass splinter which i removed with twiesers DOH
My six line eats them like a big boy at a buffet. I used to see them all the time but any more it is so rare I stop and watch them for awile before getting out the chop sticks and placing him out in the open for the wrasse to go crazy on.
