My 2" baby sevs wont eat floating pellets, they wont feed from the top at all - and are currently eating Tetra Prima, and catfish pellets, from the bottom.

Are there any proper cichlid foods I can feed them that sink like these? Cant find any - bought a bag of Hikari Gold and they wont even touch it, not even when I crush it up

Hi,

I've got 2 baby Sev's as well, and managed (somehow) to get some Hikari Tropical Cichlid Complete (it sinks) - they love it (just looking at the moment to try to buy some more from somewhere, but not having much luck with finding Complete itself)

Did they eat floating pellets when you first got them? Have they ever been fed floating pellets? How many times have you tried floating foods?

If they haven't had it before and you've only tried a few times, they most likely won't, generally I'd reccommend starving them for a few days then try feeding the floating foods again. My 4 sev's will eat anything that hits to water, which is anything, flake, floating pellets, sinking pellets, algea wafers, plant cuttings, bloodworm etc.

...managed (somehow) to get some Hikari...

What do you mean? That you haven't been able to get those pellets or Hikari in general?

I actually bought a lettuce clip the other day as when they go in the big tank, I'm going to try them with some blanched...erm...lettuce.

So do the cichlid complete really sink? As ours is cichlid gold, and it doesn't.

I dont know what they were fed previously, but I guess I could find out - but to be honest, they're growing well and colouring up nicely on the Tetra Prima, I just dont like the idea of them being on a food that isn't for cichlids. I've tried them several times with this Cichlid Gold, even crushed it up today so it did sink, and they just sucked it in and spat it out - and wolfed the Tetra Prima instead  I'll see if I can find somewhere that do the Cichlid Complete, I've only seen Gold and Staple on Ebay but I'm sure there's bound to be somewhere that sells it. I take it it's not as high quality though? :/

Any other brands that do a sinking cichlid pellet? All I've found are Malawi ones.

Edited to add - they eat algae wafers/tablets I put in for the plecs....off the bottom.

my sev eats my plec algy wafers all the time he loves them!!

There's usually none left for the plecs. ( And thats after hes eaten all the surface food)

Make sure your levels are all correct etc as ive always known them to be rather lively.
Great fish :D

Levels are fine - they're very lively - especially if the Tetra Prima's handy *lol* Just a slight update, I decided not to give them any Prima today, and put some Hikari Cichlid Gold in, and whoomph - one of the red shouldered sevs finally got the hint  Other two....ate the plec wafers and courgette I put in for the pleccies...

Cool - I'll have to get some Hikari Gold then before my Sev's get too used to sinking pellets.

Tetra min I believe makes some color enhancing sinking pellets for discus and other cichlids..

Has discus on the container.. the container is yellow with a red lid..

Sinks at a good rate... good for scaredy fish

I think that's the Tetra Prima isn't it? I use it for all my fish, even my tetras love it :)

Found out that although they are nibbling the odd cichlid pellet, De Niro the 10" gibby is scooting up to the top to nick them too. So they've not been eating as many as we thought. :/ But they have fat tummies, so I'm not overly worried yet.
