Hello.

I just brought 4 platys home (only inhabitants of the tank), and one looks like he's having trouble. He's sitting on the bottom most of the time, but he can swim. He'll swim around, but then sink to the bottom. He also has white above his nose, that I didn't notice in the store (it's not ich).

Is this probably just discoloration and lethargy from stress, or do you think he's sick? The water stats are fine, no ammonia or nitrite.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Update: The platy has died

Does anyone have an idea if it's contagious? Should I expect the other 3 to come down with the same symptoms?

im not sure about what it was that happened im afriad but id contact the person/store you got them and tell them whats happened

ask them for an explanation

Sounds bacterial to me with the sinking.
The white on his nose did it look fluffy looking or just white bleaching bemeath the skin.
R.I.P.

The skin just looked white, not fluffy or anything. If it's something bacterial, should I expect the others to come down with it? So far, so good...

Just keep an eye on the other fish and do some daily water changes.
Fish will sink to the bottom of the tank, lay on there sides, and unable to get off the bottom of the tank or top.

Water changes even if my ammonia and nitrite are zero?

Thanks for your input!

Just to dilute the bacteria down in the tank.

Thanks for all your help, Wilder.

Now, if I do end up seeing symptoms of a swim-bladder or other bacterial infection, can I treat that while I treat for ich? It seems like one of them has started to come down with white spots. (I've read up on it and think I have a fair handle on it.)

The only whitespot med that I know of that you can use a bacterial med with is esha 2000.
I would just treat the whitespot for now.
