Hi, I have a 35g high tank (20g footprint). I have always kept a single 'pet' fish in it. I recently lost my Buttikoferi after 14 years and am thinking of switching the tank to brackish. I've been reading up on scats, puffers & monos. It looks like they need to be kept in groups. Has anyone had success with keeping them as specimen fish? Thanks

Monos and scats are a schooling fish and while become very skittish and other problems when not kept in a school. Think about keeping 1 neon tetra, it is the same with monos and scats. Not to mention your tank is way too small for them. Puffers on the other hand, are not a schooling /shoaling (aside form a few species like the South American Puffer) fish. You could esaily keep a Green Spotted Puffer in your tank, or even a few Figure 8 Puffers.

Thank you for your quick response. I was leaning toward the pufferfish. I was mostly concerned with their feeding. Do they require live food, or will they adjust to frozen and freezdried?

They will readily accept frozen or freeze dried foods. Just note that they have ever-growning teeth and will require hard-shelled foods such as snails, clams, etc. etc.
