Ok so...I'm not really a newbie..I've been keeping fish for 15yrs and I currently run a 55gal SW reef, a 30gal SW reef, a 20gal FW (plastic plants) and a 1.5ltr SW pico.

I'm currently closing down my 30gal SW and changing it to FW tropical. I'd like to put some real plants in it as I HATE plastic plants. I only have them in my current FW tank because my oranda eats anything live I put in.

What is a simple, pretty planting scheme that won't require any special equipment (I'm on a tight budget here)?

I am planning on using a green slate substrate, although I do have bucketfulls of various sized gravel and crushed coral.

The tank is an Aqua One AR620 in case that helps :)

If you are on a tight budget then I am guessing light will be below 2WPG, no CO2 etc, so try Hygrophilia Polysperma, Rotala sp, Java Fern, Water Wisteria, Vallisneria sp.

There is a pinned article giving info on a variety of plants and their requirements.

Cheers, Dave.

Well I have standard PC lighting that came with the tank. I do have a small MH luminaire I could use but I'd have to buy new filters as it won't fit the tank with the built in trickle filter fitted.

I did read the pinned stuff before I posted but it went straight over my head I'm afraid  I understand that planted tanks need different things to an ordinary "plastic plant tank".
