I have two silver mollies in my tank, and they get on my nerves a hell of a lot.
Most of the time they have this moronic exression on their face, they do unbeleivably stupid things, like "pecking" bits of gravel.
I like them but hate them at the same time please help!

Thats what fish do, they don't have facial expression and they 'peck' the gravel because the left over food falls into it and they eat it.

???? how would you like your fish to behave? maybe if you didnt have a stock of food in your cupboard/fridge etc you'd be outside pecking through the grass/sand/gravel looking for food to survive.
have you ever thought that maybe your mollies are looking through the glass at you thinking what is that big pink thing with the moronic look on ITS face doing just staring at us all day?????

i think mollies have cute faces.its part of their appeal to me.

Ah- you have misunderstood this. The expression you are referring to is the Deep Thought Expression. This, in mollies, denotes a Superlatively High IQ. The typical Gravel Shuffle you describe is a mental aid, employed by poeciliids occupied with intricate calculations.
Anything else you wanted to know? ;)

LOL, ever watch Hitch hikers Guide tot he Galaxy? They could be plotting.

8) however this gravel shuffel may enhance a mollies thinking ability, but there is a major flaw in the "gravel shuffel" it looks utterly terrible.

yes that must be it mollies........................ are indeed some of the planets super beings!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :fun:

Should we perhaps entertain the possibility that Mother Nature, in designing the behaviour pattern, expressions, instincts etc of the animal kingdom, did not make it her prime consideration how intelligent or vice versa these would look from the point of view of one of her creations, viz. Man?

Personally I like to keep fish to study how their behaviour makes sense in terms of their needs, not of mine. But if I want company that seems intelligent judged by human standards, I know I need to turn to other human beings; it would be unfair to judge other animals by our yardstick. My daughter can already do quite a decent analysis of a piece of poetry- I don't see that that is a skill that would be very helpful to even the brightest of oscars. A fish that could recite Shakespeare but was too dumb to dig for his own food would be a bit of a failure as a fish.

Naturally, there are also fish, and other animals, whose behaviour patterns will not fit into the needs of my living room, hence I might pass on the shark catfish- and on ferrets and other destructive mammals. But that's up to me to foresee by research. I don't know how a molly would cause enough havoc for it to look dreadful, unless you want your fishtank like an immaculate piece of lawn. I prefer the more natural look, to me a successful tank is a small piece of Nature, and Nature isn't tidy.

I'm sorry to hear about your mollies. I would say they're probably sick. My mollies typically have pleasant facial expressions and would never resort to digging for their food. I have to carefully lower it on a tray into the water for them to eat. It's a real pain. But, then again, I'm rewarded well as they do quite a few tricks for me like hopping into my hand if I hold it over the tank, swimming through an obsticle course I have set up in my tank, and playing hide and seek with me.

I would certainly consider taking them back to the store, as you seem to have gotten some bum fishes. I would also highly recommend the male dwarf gouramis. They tend to be a little higher maintenance, though. Since they're not able to turn the pages by themselves, I have to stick close to the tank to give them a hand as they're reading. I have been disappointed with their selection of reading material lately, though. They started out really liking Popular Science, but their tastes are now with the stupid "Captain Underpants" books. Ugh.

This simply isn't good enough. It is your responsibility to cultivate those poor fishies' taste!
