Does fin rot act that quick? or is it bullying? Its quite a bit of his tail and he is not keen on swimming, he is still feeding.

I've put him in my other 18 gallon uk tank for now, but thats not fully cycled as its just been running a week, but i did put filter media from my old tank in the filter and i do use hagen cycle. I did test for ammonia and nitrite both were 0 ppm. The 18 gallon has aquarium salt 5mls per 2 gallons.

Question would you put him back in the main tank in a fry net instead?

I am treating the main 28 uk tank with Myxazin because my blue guppy had a slight white cotton wool patch on his side, i'm only doing half does as i have fry in a net in this tank too.

There are no other damaged fins in the tank. I have 5 male guppies.

He could be old as i bought him full grown.

Could be bullying. Finrot doesn't act mightily fast, and looks a bit different to bites. Male guppies can be nippy to each other, especially if they all gang up on one. You can put him in a breeder net, until his tail is healed.

Hes prolly being bullies around a lot. Did you observe the other fish chasing him and nipping at his tail?

If he is a delta tailed guppy(i.e long tailed guppy), their tails often rip when the filter current is too strong for them as they are not bred to cope with strong filter currents.
If the fin has white/grey edging to it, it is most likely finrot though- in delta tailed guppys this can cause serious damage over night as they do have very good imune systems.
For best recovery(if he does not have finrot), isolate him from any fish that could bully him and treat him with melafix to help prevent secondary infection and make sure the filter current is not too powerful.

Within a few hours of half dosing with myxazin my red tuxedo female platy has taken a real turn for the worse, she is bloated and can not swim up very far and sinks to the bottom, i've put her in a fry net as well. She is doing head standing and laboured breathing, she is still swimming around but losing her balance.

I noticed a few days ago she looked a little bloated, i thought she may be pregnant, then her tummy returned to normal. Shes been healthy and feeding fine till a few hours ago and its a total change.

I feed fresh veg every day and live/frozen food.

Going back to my silver guppy, yes he is a delta tailed, my filter current isn't to strong, the fluval 3 is turned down and my external eheim is not fast flowing, i do have a bit of a current but not enough to disturb swimming.

The guppies always chase each other, i've had them all now for months, this is the first time one has showed any damage.

I think i'm having a bad fish day. :(

What are the current stats in your quarentine tank? It isn't very good to have sick fish in a cycling tank, your platy has a swimbladder disorder, which are mostly untreatable. A diet of veg based foods with no high protein ones, melafix and a med like "anti swimbladder disorder" by interpet are your best chances.
Find out who the bully is amoungst your guppys as once a fish becomes a bully they usually don't stop and its a case of rehoming the victum or bully fish and replacing it with another more docile one to balance out the numbers.

They're in my main tank, Ammonia 0 ppm, Nitrite 0 ppm, nitrates are 20 mg/l and i do a 25% water change every week, i have two filters an eheim classic and the fluval 3. I've never had water quality issues but what i do have are brought in disease issues, it seems fish that are bred and kept in stores longer are much more unhealthy, i'd had her just under a week.

I did test my other tank before putting fish in there.

My red tux just died, her scales are up on her right side and she is so bloated, from looking perfectly healthy to dead took just a few hours.

:rip:

Sorry, R.I.P. dropsy, just do a few water changes.

Well i've just had another female platy die she was a golden twin bar. :(

So desperate measures i've taken out now my silver wag and other golden twinbar female as the the ratio to male to female is to high and put them in the new 18 uk gallons. This tank also has aquarium salt dosed at 5mls to every two gallons, i could increase to the correct dose which is 5mls to every gallon. This tank is planted with fast growers like wisteria.

Remember i did put filter media in from my old tank, and i do use hagen cycle and i have tested the water.

How do you set up hospital tanks, as they can't be running all the time?

to keep your hospital tank up you could always add a couple drops of ammonia every day to mimic fish being in there...or keep a few small fish in there all the time..

Well i know one thing i will not ever be buying platies or any other fish from Herts Fisheries again, as they brought in a virulent bacterial infection and parasites, so when i've finished dosing with myxazin given a few days and carbon, i will start treating with sterazin :(

My poor silver guppy at least he is still interested in food.

Tonight my silver guppy is looking a little better and actually swimming around.

The guy at Waterlife recommended double dosing with myxazin as it was virulent, so a fish can lose alot of tail when the bacteria is so aggressive, so it is possible to lose a tail overnight.

One of my queen loaches look bloated in my other tank, i'm only single dosing this tank because of fry.

Would you continue double dosing till the tail is showing more improvement?

I've got to treat for parasites as soon as i can, as they're all flicking.

Yes, i've double dosed before if they had a bad bacteria infection, good luck.

Go ahead and double dose, but watch your water stats as the antibacterial may have a negative effect on your "good" nitrifying bacteria

It did in my new tank i had a small nitrite spike 0.05 ppm, my silver guppys fins are still receeding plus now my platy female with no lips has cloudy eye.

I put in last night waterlifes bacterlife and this morning did a 50% water change, all i can do is keep treating. I did test this morning and it was back to 0 ppm for nitrites but i still did the water change after.

In my main tank my blue guppy still looks affected as the dorsal fin has white edges, i'm only single dosing this tank as i have fry in there.

These female platies also brought in parasites, but i can't treat that till i get rid of the bacterial infections.

The woman at Herts Fisheries when i asked for advice about the platies i'd just bought from them, all she could do was have a go at me because i do a 25% water change every week and she says i shouldn't.
