This is a crazy one.

Well I have 3 big silver dollars and they are all have 2 black spots above each other in the same place. Its appeared over night.

What the %£*$)%& is this about?

Are they horney or ill? I dont know if they male/female/trans sexual/homosexual or what.

Thanks

i have 4 large sd circa 6.5/7" - these go black in certain places when horny or when they are knarked off - but i would not say they are ever like a spot

They are horny!!!!!

A nubmer of fish display this black spot on their sides when they are looking to breed, my severums (3 types) my silver dollars (2 types) and my geos all do it!!

Worry not

That makes me very angry, they are ill with fin rot and need to be resting. Thats it, they are having an early night, lights out at half 7 it is.

Actually could it be because I put some Myxazin in?

sorry guy they are not ill, well the black spots don't give any indication of illness. spots, on or around the "lateral line, are common amongst fish. my dollars develop them when i put the lights out, though they do appear, occasionally during the day. as far as i can make out, the spots are caused by changes in the slime coat, in areas of the fish connected with sensory detection. the change in the coat, causes the light to be diffracted in a different manner. usually being noticed as BLACK SPOTS.

can anyone tell me about my silver dollars, today i was watching them the big one was leaning on its side and the smaller one of the 2 was swimming under it and they were both curling and flapping together and then swiming off really fast, then doing this strange courtship thing,i havent seen this before.is there anything that i shoul do?,,thanks in advance,,kenny

Black spot and patches can be fighting wounds, ammonia burns that are healing, and black spot.

this is true, but what are the chances of the fish having two wounds, (especially ammonia burns) both in the same place, but on opposite sides of the fish? as for black spot, i bet the spots the OP sees, are somewhat bigger than the 2mm or so.
for dollar keepers, these spots are not uncommon. as some keepers have mentioned in this thread.

hi before yous start argueing what the spots are on the fish, can you tell me if mine are breeding?,,thankyou,,kenny

it seems that these spots, may well be connected with breeding, but seem to occur at other times too. it may just be, breeding behaviour. i have male and female in my tank, but have yet to notice any eggs, or their issue. the forums and boards are full of requests for info on this. they all share the same thing, two black spots, one above and one below the lateral line, just behind the gill, duplicated on both sides of the fish. if it is mating, you will see a change in the density of the colour in the tail and fins, and black marks, seem to appear in them as well. also some report a black line allong the lateral line.
