Hi there, I write this topic to see if anybody is able to offer a home for a Silver Arowana we have where I work, which unfortunately has grown too big for us to look after.

We've had him for a couple of months now, and despite interest in taking him, we have been very careful in making sure any potential owners have the right tank size and setup to accommodate him and look after him (or her). Unfortunately it has been necessary to turn a couple of people away, purely because their tank was simply not big enough to take it.

Currently, the Arawana is approximately 15" long, but it should be pointed out that it will of course continue to grow, and from speaking to a few people, I am told the maximum size in the domestic environent is around 28", although this will vary - obviously it could grow bigger, or smaller. Therefore, you ideally will be needing a tank with large dimensions (so a big surface area), I would recommend a minimum of 600L, although it should be said that a smaller tank would suffice for the time being, but an upgrade would be necessary at a later date and this is something to be aware of. A covering over the top of the tank, preferably weighed down is absolutely essential as they are renowned for their jumping ability and habit.

Tankmates is another common query. From speaking to an arowana owner, oscars and larger cichlids are a good bet, pirhanas are also suggested by some, but this is a matter for debate.

As for setup, in general terms for the time being, a strong filtration system, temp 25-27 degrees, and a weekly quarter water change.

Feeding - Live shrimp (which we sell), Insects (again, which we sell), fish etc. Prawns and maggots as well, just anything that's meaty really. Unfortunately though, you're aquarian flake will not be sufficient!!

As for cost - competitive - This is negotiable and needless to say, on this one, our emphasis is on finding the arry a good home, and we are not looking to make any massive profit, simply not loose any money but we can discuss this if you should find yourself thinking about adopting him/her!

Anybody who is interested, and could realistically be able to give the chappy a nice place to live, please feel free to PM me or post in this topic. If you would like to come in and see for yourself just how striking he/she is, and perhaps have a chat about him, then again if you PM me or post in this topic, we can arrange a mutually convenient time. As I say above, we are located in Sutton, Surrey which is South London and close to the M25.

I also look forward to any questions or advice from current Arowana owners, but please, no "horror stories" or anti-arowanist rubbish from anybody who doesn't actually own an Arowana. I'd suggest those that do know just how interesting these things are to watch.

YOu will struggle to give this fish away to someone who can house it for life mate. Its not how many litres a tank holds its the footprint and who ever told you to keep them with piranahs needs taking out back and shooting.

 Thats the way :look:
Good luck trying to find it an adequate home for it, as mark said you will struggle to find someone who can house it for life though, and its the dimensions of the tank which really matters :/ A really tall tank would be pretty useless if it had little width/length.

Will only grow to 28"? CFC's has got past that before reaching 2 years old.

As said above, you will do very well if you can find someone with a big enough tank to take one of these (I seem to recall CFC has the odd flutter over whether his 8x6 tank will be big enough full term) who still knows so little as to actually pay for a larger silver.
