Ok a sump is basically a tank in which you can filter & heat water etc by siphoning from main tank and pumping back up. everything i read has sumps with protein skimmers on etc for salt water.

my silly question today: how many people here use a sump on freshwater, how many believe that they could be just as easily equally used on freshwater and possibly worth it?

I use it on my larger FW tanks. It allows greater gas exchange and a place to hide filters and heaters.

It does make planted tanks harder however, but for heavier stocking it is great, and provides a great place for wet/dry or FSB filtration as well.

The only thing I have found is that sumps tend not to be as good as cannisters for mechanical filtrate (overcome by connecting a small cannister loaded with filter floss to the sump).

a rather good idea for the mechanical filtration issue. im looking to get a 55 us gallon tank and cannot decide what to do... as usual.
