Silly guppy

I arrived home yesterday to find one of my guppies had got stuck in the filter and died. It's the smallest of gaps he managed to get stuck in, approx 0.5cm wide, 0.2cm high.

I've read that you can cover the filter with stockings, but will it stop things like the bacteria growing?

I have a stocking over my filter now...has had one for months now...due to always having fry...I have never had any problems with my water with it on there...I change the stocking once a week, to clean anything that might be stuck in it...Good luck...
