In another post on this forum, I mentioned the white flakey algae growth that seems common in most new tanks on silicon/rubber/suction cups.
I've been struggling for as long as I've had the tank with this white algae, and nitrite spikes that haven't settled down as fast as I had hoped (two month old tank, still spiking despite careful filter care and water changes. No zeolite etc).
So this white algae is mostly left alone until it makes all my azoo soft silicon decorations palid with a filmy white flakey coating. Ive occassionally removed them and scrubbed it off to restore their bright tropical colours.
But 2 days ago I decided to remove the azoo decorations totally as many have been stained yellow by the algae and I was hoping to somehow restore their colour. I put them aside for later.
My nitrites have dropped dramatically since then.
I stuck one of the unscrubbed silicon plants in the spare fry tank last night (dont worry, it's empty of fry, just running a filter). Result was a crazy high nitrate spike in the small tank by morning.
So is this algae growth causing nitrite spikes, or is the nitrite causing the algae growth? Experimentation seems to suggest the former.
I'm thinking of not using any silicon plants anymore until the tanks are matured for a good 6 months !
