Hi

I know this isn't a tropical fish question but can someone please help me and my two goldfish?!

I have a small 14L (3 gal) coldwater tank (elite 14) with two goldfish. I have a hagen elite mini filter that came with the tank. This recently stopped working but I have managed to fix it for the time being. As the tank is in my bedroom I would like to invest in a new, more quiet filter.

Can anyone recommend a good silent internal filter that would be suitable for my tank without blowing the fish away?
I have read that a Eheim aquaball filter is good but not sure if they are quiet? The smallest model is the 2206 but would this be too big for my tank (think it recomends for up to a 15Gal tank)?

Any help would be very much appreciated!!

The aquaballs are FANTASTIC but they are too big for your 3 gallon...you can't keep goldfish in a tank that small for very long anyway because its cruel so you might consider getting a 10 gallon tank MINIMUM and then again this might need to be upgraded as they grow...otherwise the size of the tank will stress them out and probably kill them so its not good!
Then you can get a decent filter like an aquaball! :good:

I use the aquaball as a powerhead to improve circulation but im not sure id use it as a main filter, it has 1 main downside IMO. You switch it off for maintenance and all the c**p that its filterd just falls back out the bottom? Not great.

I have a Rena i1 cycling my puffer tank right now, about 2ft away from my ear and I cant hear it over my laptop hum, its very quiet.

does tanks upto 50l and turns over 300LPH

Hi Kate,

There are a lot of us here that like hardware and its really tempting to get into this question, but the problem is where its leading. Soon the goldfish experts will come along... Sadly, goldfish really belong in a pond. They can be kept indoors but the size tank two need is huge. The wonderful thing would be to re-home these fish so that they have this kind of space with someone and then find some nice colorful little fish that would work for you in the size tank that fits your plans.

Nice little tanks with quiet little filters are great for tiny fish, but these goldfish will put out 30% of there own body weight in waste each day, requiring really big filtration and very frequent maintenance. People do keep them in tanks that are too small and there are various arguments about it but often once you realize that there is something pretty bad about it for the fish themselves, it takes some of the joy out of it.

I'm not an expert by any means, but just thought I'd throw it out before they get here, and I will say that you've found a wonderful place to talk these things out! There are so many here that have been helpful to me.
